AMD fx 8350

Hi there! I'm having trouble deciding whether or not it's worth it upgrade to a fx 8350 from a fx 6300. I can't afford to build a new computer or get a new motherboard with an I7. I know it's not really worth it for video games at stock speed, however with my new 8GB of hyper x fury RAM I can overclock to full with both as far as I know. I have my 6300 stable at 4.4Ghz so I don't need to upgrade any time soon, as I can max out any game right now for the most part. However I read in a few places that the 8350 can OC to 4.95Ghz at the most, so I could probably get it close to that. I'm impressed that the 6300 can go to 4.4Ghz from 3.5. Anyways, yeah I'm not sure if it's worth the $200 to get the 8350 and I doubt I could sell my 6300 anyways. Thanks.

The 6300 and 8350 are basically the same chip with the 6300 lacking 2 cores and everything else like cache and TDP scaled to match this. Yes you can overclock the 8350 up to 4.9GHz and well passed that if you've got the right set up, but the 6300 can clock just as high in theory. If anything the 6300 would probably clock higher on the same board and cooler as what you have now since it uses less power and would generate less heat. You're hitting 4.4GHz with the 6300 because you're running a 970 chipset board rather than a 990 chipset. AMD chips in particular hit the VRM's hard when overclocking and you really want an 8+2 VRM count to get higher stable clock speeds. Most 970 boards are 4+2 or similar whereas most 990 boards are 8+2. I used to have a 4+1 board and could only get about 4.1GHz regardless of how much voltage I gave it. I upgraded to my current board that has a 8+2 VRM count and I hit 4.3GHz pretty easily before getting too hot and could even run at 4.1GHz at stock voltage, which would have been impossible on the previous board. Once I switched to water cooling I jumped up to 4.7GHz, something that would have been impossible on my old board regardless of cooling.

The point I'm trying to make is upping to an 8350 won't net you any better overclocking, if anything you'd get lower overall speeds. Yeah you get the two cores but the instances where that noticeably helps are far and few between. Your motherboard won't let you overclock an 8350 more than you're already at. Save your money. Investing really anything into AM3+ platform is a waste of money, except maybe a better cooler since they'll be compatible with next gen stuff.

What is limiting you at 4.4GHz, temperature or stability? Have you read my overclocking guide? I wrote it based off my 8320 overclocking and a lot of what is said in there will apply directly to you, particularly stuff like power options which can have a noticeable impact.

Thanks. Stability is the problem, and before my new RAM I could only do 3.8ghz stable. Don't quite know why RAM affects overclocking but now I know. It automatically went to 4.1 average and 4.4 max after installing the RAM. I haven't bothered to try to go higher.

Do it manually, much more stable and you'll likely get higher than that. Automatic overclocking software is almost always terrible.

Software overclocking for me has never been stable. I would never trust it.


Overclocking via BIOS is still the way to go.

And to further expand on @Darren's point, I wouldn't go out and buy a new 990 board just to get that extra headroom. Definitely not worth the price.

FX CPUs are the devil. They are terrible. I pity your Fury X running with an FX 6300. Holy bottlenecks Batman. Don't get an 8350. Waste of money right now. That platform is doomed in so many ways.
Wait for ZEN and then win the lottery or bet on the right horse so you can afford a full system upgrade :)

I don't see AMD coming out with any new processors except the fx-9370. I think they're just giving up as Intel is just way better.

I didn't know about the new zen processors. I was just going by what is out now. I fix computers so looking up the latest processors isn't really a priority.

plus I'm looking at Intel anyways, not too enthused about AMD any more.

So your excuse for not knowing what is coming out is that you don't look at what's coming out?

I haven't ever worked with people who want a gaming computer. My target market is low income people and they look for low end products. So knowing the best that's out there hasn't been important at all.

but this is embarrassing I really should know this stuff.
