Depends a lot on who you ask. Apple definitely makes quality products but their OS and overall user experience aren't for everyone (including me). Windows machines give you a lot more flexibility and you can get just as good of quality machines, you just need to know what you're looking for. Personally I despise HP, notoriously low quality except for a few of their top end model lines. My preferred brands are Asus, Dell, and probably Lenovo. Gateway and Toshiba don't exist anymore since they made crappy products. Acer used to be awful but their newer machines aren't bad.

If you're wanting similar quality as a Macbook in terms of physical design/durability you'd probably want to look at a Dell XPS or some of Asus's higher end models.

I used to work at a repair shop and have repaired and sold hundreds of laptops from all brands.

And apple are stupidly expensive for what they are and not particularly better made than most the remaining Windows machines. Having said that Apple officianados will argue vehemently that Apple are the best. You pays your money and you takes your choice. Personally I would NOT touch anything Apple if they were giving them away free.

Damn

but lets just say for the sake of argument what microsoft is the world leader when it comes to computer software and it would be number one in the world as far as desktop/laptop computer goes assuming we were to assume this. why wouldnt it be possible for any computer brand to be number one on a global scale like gm is to automobiles, levis is to denim pants, nike is to athletic shoes, lacoste is to polo shirts, chiquita is to bananas, lenscrafters is to optometry, goodyear is to tires, exxonmobil is to petroleum, walmart is to retail, mcdonalds is to fast food, ykk is to zippers, colgate is to toothpaste, chase is to banking, pablo escobar was to cocaine, ect.....???? why cant we determine who is number one when it comes to pcs both desktop and laptop???? why so many factors and variables???? why must it be so difficult in this case??? lets assume apple is to computers but you guys are saying not so easy partner.... im only asking because in the distant future i want to purchase a desktop and laptop and money wouldnt be an object. rsvp.

store bought i would stay with Asus or Dell. A build at a local computer store is better or build your self.
I never bought a Apple and stayed with the majority of people which is like windows 10. And most business and professional programs will be associated with windows. Learn it now and get comfortable with it. Microsoft windows and computer programs will mostly be associated with this. Not Apple.

There is hardly ever a single best in any market or economy. There's too many factors in tech and most other companies to have one just be "the best" ( and GM certainly isn't it for cars). You also seem to be largely ignoring the fact that Apple makes their hardware and software and sell them together while there's a multitude of manufacturers that all use the same software on various hardware (Windows).

Apple provide good product.
But never own one as I could not justify the price tag for it.

I don't need the best, i just need something with satisfactory performance with reasonable price tag.

There is absolutely no argument, like it or lump it Microsoft are number one. If Microsoft are number one, which they are, then computers that use microsoft products are, by default, number one. If you want to do music stuff or arty stuff then go for an Apple. If you want to do what 99.9999999% of the rest of the world are doing then it has to be Microsoft and the computers that will run Microsoft software. As said if you are looking for best hardware then Asus or Dell. I'm not a big lover of Asus, pretty machines but that is about it. I like Dell for their backup which, for me, have been second to none.

Does anyone really care who is "number one"?
I only care about what I own and use.
If I like it then I like it ... regardless of whether it was made by number one or number eighty-seven.

The company's "number" doesn't matter to me.

Well my computer is number one because I made it. :D

Agreed though. There's a thing to be said for brand preference beyond just the product itself (business practices, customer service, etc) but all in all if you like what you're using and it does what you need that's all that matters.

As I said like it or lump it. Microsoft is used by most of the world. If you'r a gamer then get or build whatever you want but gaming is a very very small part of computing in general. Massive companies world wide use Microsoft products and not Apple. Apple has it's place but again it is a very very limited place compared to Microsoft. There is one thing for sure. Nobody is going to win this discussion/argument. We all have our preferences. The OP asked a question and she has been given a range of opinions. It is now up to her. I do hope the OP is a she. I'm going by the OP's name, apologies if I'm wrong.

what do you mean arty stuff? im just a regular computer user. nothing special but heard a rumor in college that apple arguably makes the very best pcs out there........... just a rumor. rsvp.

I mean by "arty stuff" graphics and music. My rumour, IBM and IBM clones are the best computers out there. Problem with IBM clones is that lots of companies make them. My preference is Dell but there are others. They all use Microsoft software. Microsoft don't build computeers as such. There are Microsoft computers such as the Surface and some tablets but they are built by someone else and MS put their brand on them (I Think). Anyway when you say you are a "regular" computer user what exactly does that mean. Are you into graphics, video and music? If so go for a high end Apple desktop. If you are a gamer then it has to be an IBM clone with Microsoft operating system. If you are a surfer and writer of essays, prose etc then, again, IBM clone with Microsoft software. You can do that on a Mac but it's an expensive way to write a letter.

As I said in my earlier post nobody will win the Apple/IBM clone argument. We all have our preferences depending on what we do with our computers. The vast majority of hardware is now made in China whether it be Apple or IBM clone (Microsoft) stuff. I don't think the quality of hardware that comes out of China is particularly good be it Apple or Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer etc etc. Personally, as I think I said, I always buy Dell but only because I think their backup service is particularly good compared to the others.

It's really all subjective when it comes to design taste and build quality etc as well as what you are used to. I used to be very much onboard the 'Apple hate train' but over the years and after having used more of their stuff I've come to realise that what they make is good but it just doesn't really appeal to me or fit into how I like to work. Perhaps that's because I've used Windows my whole life and am just used to the Windows way of doing things and I'm really not that 'in love' with Apple's design, but like I said it's all subjective. I personally don't find MacOS particularly intuitive or easy to use as a life-long Windows user, sometimes I feel that things are perhaps a bit 'too logical' in MacOS, e.g. ejecting a USB flash drive by dragging it into the trash can doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as a Windows user but for somebody who perhaps wants something very logical (and thus easy?) to use it probably makes more sense.

Tastes and preferences change over time too remember. I know plenty of people who have switched back and forth between iOS and Android over the years and between Macs and PCs.

Darren's reply to the OP is the best in this thread IMO.

Why would I say that?

For the record, I used to be very heavily involved with Microsoft hardware and software especially in the education market so for some time I was championing them.
