Hi Guys/Gals,
I was looking to update my old PC... I am very budget minded and was wondering if it's even worth it to update my graphics card and processor or just start building a new PC?... here's what i have:

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z87
Processor: i7-4770
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 960
SSD: Western Digital Blue 500G
Samsung 840 Pro 128G
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3 1600 4x4

i've been tossing around the idea of finding compatible parts for my motherboard and just updating the processor to a newer i7 (10700k) and a newer graphics card (NVIDIA GTX 1060 or 1080)... at this point... is it going to just be better to start building off a new board and getting a new processor, GPU and move my SSD drives over? IDK.... i just bought this PC a few years ago from a buddy... and i'd hate to keep going back and forth and throwing ideas at him... so i figured a thread would help throw conversations out there for best options....

You'll need new motherboard, cpu and ram if you plan on upgrading. If the system does everything you need except gaming then it probably just needs an upgraded video card.

So.... video card > CPU.... is it even worth it to upgrade those 2 on this MB? I don't game just do some work and some photoshop w/family pictures... trying to find deals and spend <$500... if i were to build new... i guess i can wait it out. what say you?

What do you play?

The 4770 was pretty good back in the day but is starting to see limitations. There's not really any viable upgrade for that motherboard aside from what you already have, so you'd need to upgrade the board if you wanted to upgrade the CPU. In addition, newer platforms use DDR4 memory instead of DDR3, so you would also need to buy that.

A video card would be a drop in replacement, but depending on the title and performance goals you have in mind may be limited by the rest of the system.

What power supply do you have?

thanks for the detail; i've come to terms with what i have and will just start something new. i thought i can salvage my MB and build up... I am not sure what power supply I am running.. i just have 3 external fans.. it's been a while since i've cracked it open... this whole COVID thing and my son does games which made me look further into my rig. So i started going down a rabbit's hole... i watch and do photos/videos on my free time no gaming...
