I am about to purchase a new HP printer. I have a 5 yr old HP Laptop running windows 7. will I need to upgrade to windows 10 or will the new printer run with windows 7?

It will be fine. Worst case scenario is you'll have to download an installation file or printer driver off of HP for backward compatibility.

What model of printer is it? Without knowing that, really can't answer. But it would be in your best interest to upgrade to windows 10 since its still free to do so.

Microsoft ended the free upgrade years ago to Windows 10.

That being said, it would be interesting to see your current computer specs, to see if it would run well with Windows 10. I don't think anybody here would recommend using Windows 7 at this point in time, unless the computer was really old and didn't have enough power to run Win 10 without chocking.

I can guarantee they didn't. All you need to do is go here and click on update now.

That doesn't give you any information at all. Microsoft has been selling Windows 10 primarily as a download for years. It would work at full function for 30 days before telling you to pay up.

Not to mention most people that need to re-install windows would want to use the latest version and not use one that's been on a flash drive or other storage device for perhaps years without an update.

I guess you haven't tried upgrading from windows 7 in the last few years like I have. I work on computers all the time and I just had a friend upgrade her windows 7 to 10 about a year ago. They have not stopped the free upgrade. Trust me. You can either do it the way I mentioned or download and run the media creation tool and upgrade that way.

You can activate 10 with a 7 key. Full stop.

My current 10 Pro license was lifted off a Dell Workstation with 7 Pro on it that was in the recycle. Tied it to my MS account and everything. Used to have Home, which also was a 7 key I bought.

Also did it hundreds of times when I worked in a shop.

I guess "paid up" means a viable license number. I don't mess with computers much other than my own, so recycling MS window licenses didn't occur to me. Hehe.

Perhaps after public outcry, Microsoft backtracked and re-allowed older Windows 7/8 to update to Windows 10. They might have been forced after a major virus/worm. Been a while, but in the past, there has been some substantial damage done from Trojans/worms and stuff wreaking havoc on the world, attacking older versions of Windows.
