XP password .: recovery :.
In case you forgot the Admin password

1, Put the XP install Disk to the CD drive & ReSTART your PC.
It should boot from the CD - if not - check on BIOS settings.

2, Start install. Soon the Setup screen will display.
There choose the "System repair" option.
--> "If one of the following XP installations is damaged,
Setup can try to repair it" Press R to start repair.

3, The standard installation process going on, but when you
see "installing devices" progress bar, press SHIFT + F10

4, A command console appears
so there you type : NUSRMGR.CPL and hit enter.
It will list up all the existing XP accounts on your PC.

5, Pick the user account you want to change password.
For PSW free log on, type : control userpasswords2

6, After these changes, continue and finish with Repairs.
Keep the XP product key at hand. ReSTART & Done.

Good post. Do you have a link for that? The instructions there have you boot from the installation disk and go to the recovery console. And use the builtin utility included with Windows. But to offer a little more detail and a followup on how to prepare a password reset disk review the following article.

"ERD is an excellent multi purpose product, but you should know it is not a necessary one if you have a healthy system and your sole problem is the inability to logon to Windows due to a forgotten password. Not necessary because you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie’s." http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=305

To reset your forgotten XP password:

Reboot PC and press F8 till you see the windows start-up option
Use the arrow keys to select safe mode
press enter
when you see the administrator screen, select the administrator account (a hidden account that by default needs no password)
Follow steps thru control panel to reset the password for the account with the forgotten password

If you try the different methods and fail to see results forcing a reinstallation of Windows be sure to create a password recovery disk. You won't want to go through this again.

I had to use this technique before, and it ACTUALLY WORKS! I was so surprised but I was trying everything. I finally got to this, finding it on the internet and I was amazed! It works by using a hole in the windows installation process, allowing you to access what you need to change the password. So yes, I know for a fact that this works, just follow the directions correctly.
