could my harddrive from my eMachine M6811 work in a Sony Vaio VGN FS790??

my harddrive is a Ultra ATA/100
the sony all i know is a PATA.... last time i checked, PATA and UATA are the same.... any ideas?

PATA is Parallel ATA "
PATA can refer to:
  • Parallel ATA, a hard disk interface also known as IDE." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pata and you should have no problems with the drive itself except the planned reformat if a repair install of Windows doesn't work out. Make sure you backup your files and data prior to moving it to a new machine.

well, UATA is 100, and PATA is 133....

<SPAN lang=EN-US>As the hard drive industry introduces faster and higher capacity hard drives, the current Ultra ATA100 interface causes a data bottleneck between the drive and the host computer. http://global.aopen.com.tw/tech/techinside/ata133.htm

but what im saying is, i dont care if its a bottleneck, the laptop has 30GB and thats friggen TINY for gaming, WoW takes up 8GB of that, and then theres WC3:FT, C&C Generals, and alot of other crap, he didnt even have room to update his WoW because it took 1.9GB and he only had 1.8GB free!

It sounds like a good 60 or 80gb drive would be more suitable there. That article only explains the differences between ATA100 and ATA133. "Capacity" is what should be looked at there as well as CCleaner for removing useless files that take up space.

Most boards are still ATA100 compatible. You simply look at the specifications on the Sony model to see the type of drive there.
"Hard Drive: 80GB (4200rpm) PATA" was seen at one vendor lacks one important difference between desktop and laptop drives however as seen on the 2.5" WD 60gb drive at http://www.priorityelectronics.com/digital/wd600ue.htm

buuuuut, he doesnt do many harddrive intensive task... he just uses alot of space... and he keeps his system VERY clean (CCleaner was only able to find 200MB of unused crap)

The main problem seen when less then 2gb of drive remains is the lack of space needed by Windows for swap file space. That's where Windows uses that space for virtual memory to supplement the lack off installed system memory. A temporary file is created then removed afterwards when running larger programs which includes many of the newer games out. That method usually sees a performance gain there.

okay, i dont need an explination of that crap man... he needs more space, the ONLY question i asked was "Will it work in his system" because he doesnt give a crap about how slow it is, he needs more SPACE than 30GB, thats why im giving him my 80GB HDD from my harddrive, because it has more SPACE, its SLOWER, i KNOW that... okay, heres a list PC eye..

KNOW:
Same size
Same RPM
More Space
Less speed
ATA100 compared to ATA133 of the 30GB

DONT KNOW:
Is it compatible?

i have said, i dont caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare about the speed, and neither does he.. he needs more SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE but not if it means it wont WOOOOOOOOOOORK

That's where you are with the loan there. A new drive will have to be ordered to replace the current one to increase the capacity. There are some that go upto 120gb. Once you have a make and model number you can shop around for any bargain. That was only one site that allowed you to match up model to the correct drives to choose from.

it will work, its just the backwards compatibility issue, and IDE is almost always that way.

your missing the point... why would i spend like $80 for a new harddrive when im trying to SEE if the one i havewill work so i dont have to spend ANYTHING!??!?!??!?!

The problem is not with the ATA compatibility but the size of the drive's 3 1/2" casing where the Sony along with other laptops use a 2 1/2". Laptop hard drives often have to be lower in heighth as well as width. A standard drive seen in a desktop is 3 1/2" wide. That poses a problem loaning the one from the eMachines "desktop".

its not a desktop... its a laptop, like i said, both drives are 2.5" i specifically said both were LAPTOP harddrives

No you didn't! You mentioned taking an UATA100 drive out of "my eMachine M6811" quote at the start of this thread. That doesn't specify that model as either a desktop or laptop for someone unfamiliar with eMachines especially.
The link for the replacement drive wasn't intended for you to buy one but for your friend to return yours since your laptop will then be on the dsabled list.

my laptop has a dead motherboard since before summer started and im using its processor in Michelle's computer, im not too worried about it.... and with a little copy and paste into Google.com EVERY result will say its a laptop...
