What the heck is HyperMemory or TurboCache? what does it do?

Are they the same thing, just Hypermemory is ATI, and TurboCache is nVidia?

Hypermemory is from ATI and turbocache is from nVidia. Basically it's their way of combining dedicated memory with shared memory, it's suppose to make the memory run faster, therby making games run better.

Personally, I like to think of them as PCIe's budget card answer to the AGP Aperature Size setting.

So is a 256MB card with HyperMemory/TurboCache as good as a dedicated 256MB video card, or vice versa?

or is it not so simple?

Im just trying to make an educated decision as to whether either of these two cards will be capable of running Windows Vista "Aero Glass" UI, to its fullest. Nothing disabled.

I dont want to have to spend the extra to get a 7900 if its not needed.

Dedicated memory is far better than either of those. However, HyperMem/TurboCache is better than the original shared memory.

Ok. So I've basically decided between the answers in this thread and another I created the other day this is the configuration I'm looking at:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16GHz, 4MB Cache, 667MHz FSB
17" WideScreen XGA+ Display
2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
256MB nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS
120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD Burner
9-Cell Battery

$2235 CDN

Windows XP Professional w/XP Pro CD

Any thoughts? Can you see any possible problems?

as an alternate option, I can also get 2GB DDR2 533 for $1970

I don't know much about the price right off(US over here :P) But that's a pretty darn good machine. It should play games quite well, if you plan to. If not, Hypermem/TurboCache would do just fine.

Well I may put on the Battle For Middle Earth II, my favorite PC game, next to Warcraft III of course.

What do you think of the DDR2 533 vs 667, for $230 difference? Its not worth it is it?

and btw, to everyone who posted in this thread, thanks for the info!

Deffinetly not, it's not even worth $50 more.

Are you referring to the x1400? If so, it has 128MB of dedicated, and uses 128MB of your system RAM. It's a decent card, it can play CSS at medium-high settings.

Hey, ya I was talking about the X1400, but I think I decided I'm gonna get the Geforce Go 7900 GS instead.

Thanks, I posted a full-configuration on the first page of replies. This is what I've pretty much decided on.
