I've been thinking that I may want a nice laptop, which I could use for serious computing and/or gaming. I found this Acer from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115246

Basic Specs:

Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz
15.4" CrystalBrite LCD
1GB DDR2-533 (2x 512MB)
120GB 5400RPM SATA
ATI Mobility x1600
WiFi a/b/g, 100/1000 LAN, Bluetooth, IrDA
8-Cell Battery (3.5 Hours)

Basically what I'm asking, is if you think this laptop is worth the price tag of $1,079. If I get it, I would also use my $100 gift card towards it.

Hmm, from Dell you can get an Inspirion E1505 with a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 15.4" Truelife LCD, 120GB 5400RPM, and 256MB X1400 Mobility Graphics for $999.

yes, looks great, but i say save it up geoff... get a core 2 laptop

There wasnt that big of a difference between Core 2 Duo mobile and Core Duo. So if the Core Duo is dramatically cheaper, I would go with that.

I would personally stick with Dell laptops. I find them to be of the best quality.

I would got for the Core 2 Duo in quote above.

But that laptop seems ok.

True, but that only includes a 6-Cell battery, but most importantly, takes around a month to arrive :)

Very true, especially in the gaming aspect where similarly clocked CD's and C2D's were used, there was only 0-2fps difference.

I used to have a Dell and I really liked it, I also have had previous Acer models. I'm not extremely fond of Acer mainly because there batteries are usually pretty cheap (4-Cell), but this one is an 8-cell, so it would be different. And based on the reviews, it seems that most people are happy with it.

C2D laptops are nice, but there also quite a bit more expensive.

i would just build a desktop.
good choice if u want a gaming lappy though.
ill bet the card cuts down battery life a lot though... in comparison with integrated.
lol goeff, you've owned desktops, and you've owned laptops... you out of all of us would be the most informed on this stuff. i'd say if you have the money get that one though... probably the best gaming lappy ive seen for the money that it costs... probably a very balanced computer :)

i still prefer desktops though.
btw, bought my new c2d rig... $991 lol
thats not including the video card, my 7800gt. (o and i alreay had one of the 80gigs)
i mean dude, if you've got the money why not get the core 2 duo. its DEFINITELY worth it, you remember when you kept talking about it in every thread... well nows your chance...
you've even got a cooler for it already, i mean come on...

Ya, i've owned tons of laptops and desktops, I just like other peoples opinions. :)

The Core 2 Duo is nice, but compared to the Core Duo, theres not much to brag about. Surprisingly, my desktop plays games maxed out fairly well, so I see no need to upgrade it.

My previous laptop was a Dell E1505 with a Core Duo 2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, and x1400. I was able to play games like CSS on high settings (not maxed), but it was a decent gaming laptop.

Agreed, I don't think you should go with a Core 2 Duo laptop. Since you have experience with a Core Duo laptop you know what your getting for the price. Core 2 Duo really is not that much better than Core Duo, but its more expensive for C2D.

I still think Dell is the best option.

I like Dell's to, since I used to have one a few months ago. The thing with the E1505, is that the video card isnt the best (x1400), and I would need to step up to the E1705 which has the 7900GS.

If they sold pre-made Dell's on newegg, I would probably get it. I'm just trying to figure out if thats worth it, or if I should continue looking on eBay for some good deals.

Thats a bit expensive... the main reason i was considering buying that from Newegg was because I dont have to wait several weeks for them to build it and ship it out, I also have a $100 Newegg gift card.

Yeah, I never thought about the shipping. The laptop you chose is the best one for the price I could find on Newegg.

prices will drop geoff... you should know that... anything you buy now will drop like $400 in like 3-4 months
