Is it better to have files divided into subfolders rather than all in one folder? Does it do anything to loading speed? Is there a limit to how many files you can have in one folder? I'm asking using Windows XP.

It depends on the files themselves and drive space is always the limit before the system bogs down due to a full drive. Often you would different types of files into different folders to separate them by type. If you have mp3 songs by different groups or musicians you would them in folders labeled for the group or musician that they were made by.

It is if you like your stuff organized and easy to find when you have a lot of files in one particular folder; such as pictures>new year>christmas.... movies>title>movie files... music>artist>music files.. etc..

I don't think it would, probably just that delay that you have to double-click again to get to that subfolder. However, if someone was to test this out or soemthing, it could be.

No, the limit should only be based upon your hdd itself. When it get's full, then that's when you wont be able to fit anything else.

Thanks. I like to keep my music all in one folder. When I rip, I save the files as "artist-song". I then have the view in alphabetical order. I figure this is easier than clicking through subfolders.

I have over 500g of music by Artist and genre, so yeah I'm kind of compulsive when it comes being organized. I will say this when I defrag it seems to go slower than before I filed them, but that could just be my imagination.

Oh if you do as I did make sure you have ALOT of spare time on your hands because it took me forever, but having a broken leg and not being able to move much made it a but easier to find to time

I know what you mean. I got a bunch of music from a friend and had to de-organise it to fit my organizational system. He had it organised by album and had several duplicate songs as a result.

It always seems to work better when you have a main directory for music and the sub folders for each group or artist. If you want to go further to no real gain you can split those even further with sub folders for each album. When ripping a few cds here the mp3s are simply dragged into each group's own folder and I call it quits there.
