Videocard Problems, or Monitor Problem? HELP MUCH NEEDED!!!

ey, just got a new monitor, the samsung 215tw. I've been using my ATI Visiontek 9200SE PCI card for about a year now with NO PROBLEMS like this.

Anyways, after my new 20" monitor arrived, with a native 1680x1050, compared to my old 17" 1280x1024, i started to have this problem, on a 50/50 basis:

the left side, about 4" of it would go black, 2 rows of yellow pixels would flicker vertically. the rest of the resolution would cramp up and squeeze into the part of the screen that was working fine. THE IMAGE/LINK BELOW IS A 1680x1050 resolution, CRAMPED UP IN ABOUT A 1280x1080 AREA

I have only noticed this problem using the DVI on my monitor.

component, RCA's, and VGA seem to be working alright.

when i run a test with my DVI unplugged, it seems to me that the monitor will work fine, as the "connect digital input" signs floats around the screen without the weird flickering.

-i've tried it will no drivers, using the plug and play settings, same problem.
-also with the newest drivers, for all product, same problem.

all with just the DVI.

so, what do you think?

**EDIT: this also happens on other resolutions, not just 1680x1050

Have you tried any of the manual adjustments to center it? The auto adjustment doesn't seem to be working. RMA time by the looks of things.

thanks for the response guys

alot of features like auto focus only work with VGA for obvisious reasons. becasue im using a digital feed, i only have coltrol over colour representation and contrast/brightness.

im new here, and unclear on some terminology, what does RMA stand for?

its weird that it is only with the DVI, maybe its just a faulty compoenent in the monitor?

Oops, I didn't see that part before :o , that is pretty strange. Have you tried another cable? It could indeed be something screwed up with the DVI compenent, in which case you'd probably have to return the monitor.

RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization, in other words, return it.

yeah, i called camsung, they are sending me out another one. however, it is a refurbished.

im kinda hoping it has the same problem, at least that way i can keep my NEW one, and have assurance its not the monitor, but rather somethhing else with my setup,

-cables
-bad videocard configuration

i'll be building soon, so if it is infact something unrelated to the monitors components, then it should correct the problem wheni have a new build

A lcd monitor usually has an auto focus button right on the front beneath the display screen itself. That would probably be the one closest to the center at the bottom there if that isn't the menu of options button. But to see it shifted that far to one side points at something wrong with the monitor itself nothing else. If your video card was defective you wouldn't see a good displayed pushed to one side. You probably would see a distorted display if something even came up.

auto focus is for VGA

Apparently you have never run an lcd monitor before. For the Samsung 215tw look over the "adjusting the monitor" section found at http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200604/20060428100201828_BN59-00520A-01Eng.pdf

kingquota remember to press the "auto" button seen on the front along with the menu and other buttons. Let's see if the self adjusting control still works. Here's a quick screen of the manual to locate it. http://img487.imageshack.us/my.php?image=samsungqe5.jpg

wow, thanks for the compliment.

and im telling you, i dont care what the manual says, auto focus on this monitor is only usable in VGA. in digital or DVI it says "not available", which makes perfect sense, becasue its a digital feed.

its all good, thanks for the help guys. i got a new monitor today and it had the exact same problem, which means, its with the cable (ive tried 3 now, so unlikely) or my vid card. i believe it is the latter. its alright, i'll just use analog for the time being untill i get my new build

Well you should see the self adjuster go to work for you there. If you need any recommends for a different make and model just say the word.

i love this monitor, i just would love it more if it worked with no problems

i looked into getting a dell at first, but ive heard of so many problems with them. i just think this was the best bang for my buck, and its a lovely monitor, with great options on it

I saw one 19" viewable BenQ model having a special this week at newegg with the 2ms response time. Most of the better models are at 8ms with several at 12ms or 16ms. Viewsonis has some good models if the replacement turns out just another headache.
