I just got my amd 4000+ and 1 of the pins is bent should I try to straighten it or just leave it alone or return it?...help please

try to bent it straight. :) but take your time for it.. sont worry,.. it wont snap off because its bend only once. ;)

well I bent it straight as I could and I pushed it in the socket my comp I put together today is running fine...if the pin broke off would I know it? would it mess up my system or hold it back? thx

If you were extremely careful and straightened the pin successfully you probably lowered the cpu in without it breaking off. Depending on which one you would probably know right away since that would see some unstable system behavior if it even ran.

You should be fine. The pins on a processor are usually quite resilient.

Not if a slight kink was left and saw it raised up a little. That would cause a problem right away. If it was bent slightly at the point where it meet the casing and was pushed back into place it should drop into place as long as it was only leaned over and the pin stayed straight along the length. It seems to be working ok so that removes the worry there. :) whew!

Oh, fu...

Whatever you do, don't send it back.

If I should order a brand new, retail version CPU,
they'll just send me yours instead!
(It's not like I didn't have that happen before.)

Why wouldn't you want it? It seems to be working alright there without seeing any problems. :P

I've bent more pins then I care to remember. It's not exactly rocket science to straighten them out and it almost always works just fine when you're done.

Besides you can't buy that CPU in retail if he returns it, it would be refurbished or open box :P

Some people just need a few words of encouragement that's all. Unless you specified you wanted noob101's cpu with a bent pin they probably wouldn't even have restocked it on the shelf before processing the order. :P They are probably too busy ripping open new boxes for restock without even knowing whose cpu came in from where. Hey noob101 get some invisible ink and put XFs's name on it when you ship it back. That way XFs can use some of those special FX glasses to see if your's comes in. :P :P :P !!!

lol well the pin was bent bad it was bent almost all the way down I got it straight as I could it definetly went in the hole but I didn't know if it broke off inside cause I had to push it a little but everything works ok,stable except my damn ati 9600 xt isn't supported by this motherboard no display.. I pop in my old nvidia tnt64 and bam I have display...

That can be corrected in the bios. First make sure that AGP not PCI is set as the default there. Then increase the default 64mb aperature to 128mb. Usually that isn't needed. Make sure support for OS2 is also enabled along with Plug'n'Play. The 9600 is backward compatable to the AGP 2x/4x slot.

You certainly were fortunate there not to be replacing the cpu after turning the board upside down to bang out the broken pin. Now you just have to leave it the way it is in order to see it last. When you go to upgrade to a better cpu buy another board at the same time.

Aperture size to correct no display? Do you even know what the aperture size does or selecting AGP/PCI for that matter?

As to having no display what board and model video card do you have? I know it's a 9600XT but who makes it?

it's made by ati 9600 xt..see the thing is I have a machspeed board my slot is not an agp slot they call it a mgp it's connected to the pci ,but accepts agp cards my bios only has pci and pci express there is no agp to enable..they have a compatibilty list of cards on there website but strangely enough everytime I get to the page where the list is for the mk8-939 board my browser crashes and I can't see the whole list could somebody go to mach speed site and see if my card is compatable..it's under support then choose the mk8-939 board... thx

oh forgot my processor hardly has a load on it but it runs 21 c - 22.5 c isn't that a too low of a tempature or is it normal?

There are no 9600s listed on the page or any ATi branded cards for that matter (doesn't mean ATi brand doesn't work but they haven't tested any).

Aperature size generally has to do with the amount of memory installed on the system as well as the size of the AGP itself if you are using one. The usual advice is to set that to 1/2 of the card's total. A 128mb card would see 64mb made available for storing complex textures and effect video performance.

Too little is no good and going over a certain amount with not enough memory installed can cause problems as well. For troubleshooting purposes the advice is often given to set that to the 64mb default.

There is no rule of thumb for setting the aperture size at all. It depends what you are going to be doing with the computer. The recommended size for most modern systems with 1GB or more of RAM is 32MB, regardless of the memory on the card. However, if you are doing extremely intensive graphics manipulation, the recommended size is 256MB if your system can handle it.

the only thing I seen in my bios that might help was the plug and play was disables but I enabled it and I still get no display on the 9600 xt..could this be caused from the pin on the processor that might have broke? and could anybody please help me and tell me why everytime I go to mach speed website and select my board my browser crashes and I've tried different browsers they all crash when I select my board lol.
