Why do I lag in games with a 4 mbps connection?

I often play Star Craft and Return to Castle Wolfenstine online. I have a 4 mbps down / 512 kbps up internet connection. I checked my memory well I am playing the game and I have over 1.3 GB. Free. I checked the work level on the CPU and its not maxed out. So why do I lag in these games sometimes? I am not using any other program during the game that takes up bandwidth and I have nothing open in the system tray other then my anti virus program.

My computer is listed in my signature.

You have the latest drivers for everything? Do you have the latest direct x?
Also, when you mean lag, to you mean latency, or low FPS?

Did anyone think of something called lag from other players. :) I do not lag either but sometimes I lag on starcraft. It is called people playing with you with Dial-up awww...... could this be it?

Well when I stat "laging" in the game a message comes up that says "connection intrupted". It does not come up if its not you.

nd I have tried closeing the anti virus program. I have the lastest drivers on everything.

What I thought and looked like internet lag was actually my video card. I know this because when I updraded my video card the problem went away.

Could it be the location of the server?

Your connection could be running 100% but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem somewhere between your ISP and the server you are connecting to...

You could have the fastest connection in the world, if it's not consistent you will still lag. When an error comes up like "connection interrupted" or "connection lost" it means your internet is having trouble staying connected (duh?). It's not "lag", it's purely a connection problem.

It could be your ISP, OR it could be the server you are playing on. Some servers max out and start booting people, or sometimes they have problems and people get booted accidentally. I wouldn't be surprised if the game server is causing this problem.

Im on a 3meg connection, slightly slower than yours. The only time I have lag is when it rains. Damn rain hahaha.. One other time is like one poster said. Some one on dial up.. I can’t stand when im shooting some one and he lags over to the left or right, it’s actually kind a funny. Other times you may see lag when the game server is real full, I may notice lag in servers with high player counts. Like 20 plus players I may notice lag.

hmm... is it a fully wired connection? or is it a wireless connection?

it sounds like you are having problems with all the outside interference (rain, lightening, etc...) because you say that lag only happens when it rains...

when it rains everyone is indoors... wet lines or busy lines?

Noise

The experience I have had in the past with my cable provider has been that I didn't lose the connection but it had gotten extremely slow. The problem turned out to be that the provider had found that the area I was in had a problem with excessive noise on the line. Technically I don't know what they did to fix the problem but thats what they told me the problem had been. :)
Here is a simple speed test my provider has on their web site to check your connection speed. http://24.165.200.132/speedtest.shtml

Bingo :) Not to mention that Ethernet connections are basicly a question answer game between the 2 pc's/servers etc.
It could be a server with a low upstream for example.
also.. it could be your router ofcourse, with certain ports redirected to other pc's or something like that, the connection a certain pc can have some trouble too.
