I need a "Go!" from you folks!

Folks,

I have made my research, and came up with the components listed below, if there are any problems, please let me know before I place my order online.

1) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz (1066MHz) 4MB L2 CacheSocket 775

2) MB : Asus P5B 775 Intel 965 Express + ICH8 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR2 533/667/800 Gigabit Lan PCI-Express x16 Graphics 4xSATAII

3) RAM: Kingston ValueRAM DDR2-667 1GB PC5300 (KVR667D2N5/1G) (Here I am actually wondering, should I get 2x512mb or 1x1GB, I mean, is there any difference in performance?)

4) V. Card: EVGA Geforce 7800GTX 256MB PCI-Express

Are these components going to bring me best performance for Windows Vista and during games like Age-of-Empires III?

It's going to be my first time to build a computer from scratch,

I need to ask few questions to clarify few things, my current computer has a seperate Card for Audio, Ethernet Port, Extra USB (did not come with my Asus P4B Motherboard) So..

-The Eithernet port needed to connect to the internet, do I have to buy it or is the "Realtek PCI-E Gigabit LAN controller" listed with the motherboard does the Job? I know that I am paying for a specefic speed of internet to my service provider, but will this integrated card deliver the full performance of my internet provider, or will it cut it low?

-The mother board claims that it has a High Def. Audio, so no need to purchase Audio Drive Card, right?

For memory that would depend on whether you want the board to run in dual channel or single channel mode. I grabbed a buy on two 1gb Kington Value Ram dimms last year to replace two 512s. It was worth the investment since the 2gb total of value ended up running the system smoother then the two 512s of performance memory.

The need for the Ethernet Port being added over the onbaord Lan will depend mainly on how you are connected. This is something you have to make an inquiry on with your ISP depending on type of service. For dialup obviously not while you could possibly use the onboard.

For onboard sound the newer boards are seeing 7.1 surround sound easy enough on many models. For something like EAX effects in games then you would want to consider Creative Labs for the most part. They own EAX! While having onboard here that becomes useful only if a card goes and sound can still be available by the change to that.

omg when i fix my computer, i will definately look for you in aoe. whats your user-name? mines mw1111, but i dont suspect my computer will be fixed within three weeks, but omg i would love to play you

EDIT: btw i'm not so bad at it. i have a 55% and master sergeant lol it took forever to do it

aoe? naaa... Lately I've been too busy trying to find some way of capturing screens while running FEAR in the single player mode. Even Game Cam failed to record video clips!

um lol i wasnt talking to you no offense. he mentioned it in his thread.

"Are these components going to bring me best performance for Windows Vista and during games like Age-of-Empires III?"

;)

I was just pointing out don't try to include me at this point! I'm kind of stuck in a state of "FEAR"! at the moment. :P

lol i'm still trying to beat the late greats, liike return to castle wolfenstein and the like, which are graphically sound enough for me, and are as fun as an xbox game

So you returned to the castle! With an effective screen capture tool I can grab some screens off of Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project or the original 8bit version of the game through a virtual dos window. Those never did need much memory like 4-8mb for the original Duke Nukem. Now you have to plan 2gb if you really want to upgrade to Vista and DX10 or simply run some intense graphics or CAD.

yea, i know. thats why i think that i'm going to start leaning more into console games, unfortunately i dont have any funding anymore, my employer finally figured out what the law ment when it said 'children under 15 cannot work without a permit'

Most of it looks OK, although I would change the video card. A 7900GT is cheaper and better. As for RAM, 2x512MB will give slightly better performance as you can use dual channel, although 1x1GB gives you a little more upgrade potential. If you plan on upgrading soon, go with the 1x1GB. Otherwise, get the 2x512MB.

I would, however, downgrade the CPU to an E6300 to get 2GB of RAM and a better video card.

Have you thought about your other parts? e.g. PSU, drives, etc...?

I can readily agree on going with the lower model wth the DDR2 667 instead of DDR2 800 memory. A faster model will be backclocked to the 667 speed anyways. For gaming especially with Vista most are going with 2gb of the memory they are going with.

The options of the 7900 or even 7950 series for NVidia and X1900 or X1950 for ATI if not FireGL are the current leaders. The newer the model the longer updates will be readily available down the line. I would start off with at least 450w for the minimum and boost that up for additional drives and devices to insure adequate power levels when everything is complete.

Great!! Thanks for the responses.. I have decided to go with the GeForce 7900 series, but most likely the 7950.. i am still not sure, but i want to make up my mind today or tomorrow..

About the Power Supply, Based on what should I shop for a power Supply? Is 450W PSU enough for me? or do I need 550W ?

Um why do you bring up the FireGL? It's not a gaming card. It's not on par with those cards either. I've seen you bring it up in a couple other threads as well. I'm just not seeing the comparison in performance or value. I know you're aware it's not a gaming card so why mention it if he's asking for a gaming card?

The FireGL workstation cards are not the best gaming video cards. Sure they may perform decently in games, similar to the midrange X1K and 7xxx series, but in no way are they close to performing as well as the x1900XT or 7900GT.

Not to mention the price tag they carry, which can be up to several thousand dollars for the newer models!

The 7950GT would be a good choice.

Wattage is far from the only concern. A quality 450W unit will handle it without issues, a crappy/generic one won't. The amperage available on the +12V line is an important consideration, and nVidia recommends at least +12V@26A for a system with a 7950GT.

The Enhance 5150GH would be my pick, while the XClio Goodpower 500W or Stablepower 500W would also be fine.

He doesnt know

That's the mentality we expect from someone who still doesn't know how to read posts!

I can readily agree with ceewi1 on the need for a good stable model supply. The good average for a supply is from 450w to 500w. Once you start pushing power or adding more drives/devices you may want to step that up a little from 525w to 550w. There's plenty of good models out.
