multi-boot

What is the point or purpose of booting more than one OS system? I see some people have in their sig triple boot winXP or they have vinxp+linux? I'm confused? I thought you could only run one OS at a time?!?

they might have a fully updated sp2 instance of winxp for gaming, an instance of linux for general use, and a non updated bare-bones installation of xp for p2p

I must be in big trouble then! I'm running three versions of Windows on three different hard drives here. Let's see got that XP Home edition on the primary with the video capturing, gaming, beta testing, et, setup there followed by Vista Home Premium on the second ide drive still having the same amount of games and the Ad-Aware 2007 beta being evaluated there. Then I ended up installing XP Pro on the new sata drive added for storage. When I add a few more satas maybe Linux again?

i just run good old xp pro now

i had media center 2004 for years, then i tried vista, now i'm back to basic xp pro.

by far the best of any of them.

isn't as pretty as vista, and lacks the media center, but it's the fastest, and the best for setting up a network with file sharing. vista's file sharing is crap, it's too complicated, requires all computers involved to have a password (i hate passwords) and all this on top of vista's SLOW disk management. Every time you open a folder, it gathers info on EVERY file, and EVERY folder in the folder, before it'll even launch a file.

XP Pro is simple, fast, and stable.

exactly! you have to go andd turn off everything to run vista, and after that all it is is xp taking up more space.

LMAO!! I like that.
So all 3 would be running at the same time or would you just choose which one you run at the boot menu?

On a Linux box you could run XP with a program like VMware where Windows runs on a virtual machine. For multibooting different versions of Windows on different drives you either have to change the hard drive listed as the default boot device or look at the post screen when first starting up the system to see if there's an F8 boot menu option next to the Del or other key assigned for entering the bios setup program. There the floppy drives are at the top of that screen with the hard drive(s) installed followed by the one or more optical drives.

You can install them on same hd but different partitions and choose which one to run at the boot menu.

If I simply reinstall VIsta a second time here it will automatically include the boot information from both the XP Home primary on the ide drive there and the XP Pro boot information detected on the sata drive. Upon setting the second ide drive(Vista) as the default boot drive the first screen will then offer the option to load any of the three or load the default version set to load after so many seconds.

With XP you had to use the option found in the boot order part of the msconfig or manually edit the boot.ini file to select which would be the default. With Vista you now have a BCDedit tool or something like the VistabootPRO tool for arranging that.
