Help I'm Desperate :(

So anyway, lately I have been noticing that my disk drive is making funny noises. However I really can't be sure these noises aren't normal. This alone really doesn't bother me, it's the fact that it doesn't always read or writed disks that is the problem. It used to burn things fine, but now there is always an error when I am (95% through the process of burning). In addition If I stick a disk in the drive about 80% of the time it won't pick up that there is a disk in it.

When right-click and select the properties tab and then from their I go to the hardware tab, it says that, "this device is working properly."

My drive is a TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TSL462C. It says that the manufacturer is
Standard CD-ROM Drives.

I'm really hoping there is a way to fix this without spending money, as I am just a poor highschool student, who barely has enough money to spend on gas, so any help and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it's done, man.

TSST is samsung, i think.

Try flashing the firmware, and see if that helps for a while.

It's most likely on it's last leg, tho.

And "this drive is functioning normally" just means it's communicating with your o/s correctly. It wont help if there's a hardware problem.

Bah, crap. I'll try that. Any ideas on the cause? I mean it is a couple years old, but it seems it should last.

And how exactly do you "flash" the firmware?

And finally, is it possible to install another drive on my own? I'd rather not use an external drive.

dvd drives only last a few years

there's a lot of moving parts, and a lot of chances for lasers/lenses to become misaligned since the laser mechanism moves so much more (and faster) than a dvd player or audio cd player as it actively searches for files, etc.

Flashing the firmware means swapping it... Just find out the make and model of the drive, and then google for firmware for it. MOST companies have self-installing firmware, that comes embedded in it's own flasher, so it's a piece of cake.

That is not really true, I have had my combo drive and DVD DL drive for around 3 and a half years and its still going strong, so is my DVD-ROM drive from 2001. And I use it heaps, they spin up at least 6 times a day.

Well, it 'does' cost something, even if its one buck, its one buck I could have spent somewhere else. :P I'm poor, you can tell....
