Video Card Problem

Hi, I recently tried to upgrade my PC from XP Home to XP Pro with SP2 but I aborted the install when it said it couldn't install a certain file (meaning the OS wouldnt work properly).

Now everytime I restart my PC my video cards fail to start. In the device manager they both have the yellow exclamation mark next to them and in the properties its says 'The device cannot start. (Code 10)'. The card is a Radeon X600 256MB HyperMemory. I can uninstall it and then reinstall it and it works fine but once I turn the machine off it goes back to the same state. Ive tried installing the latest drivers but it made no difference. Ive tried going into my BIOS as I heard it may have something to do with IRQ settings but found no options for anything like this in my BIOS. The options for the video card were very limited in the BIOS. I would really appreciate some help on this issue as it is really buging me. Many Thanks

P.S. The machine is Dell Dimension 5150

Dell computers should have came with a recovery partition so you can restore your system should something stuff up. A rule of thumb is not to disturb any installation process if you don't want any problems.

Dell MUST give you a CD with the OS on it, if not you can chase them up to get one for free. They have a legal obligation to supply the OS Cd.

The only reason I stopped the installation was because it said it could not install some file and that the OS may not function correctly if I didn't have the file. Thot it would be better to abort at that stage rather than have malfunctioning OS.

Do you remember what error if was? If it can't read a file, it can be your CD, or something more serious like your optical drive or even your hard drive.

Can't remember. I could try installing it again and it will probably come up. Ive known a few people who have had a lot of trouble trying to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro.

Why don't you do a clean install? You have the OS CDs right? Why upgrade? Install the whole thing from scratch after you backed up your data.

Yeah could try that. Would you recommend just backing all my data to an external hard drive and then formatting the internal hard drive? When doing this do is it the complete c:drive that I would back-up? (Never attempted anythin like this before)
