Getting a New Desktop

What do I use a computer for?

Games - Counter Strike - 1.6/Source/CZ

Chatting - mIRC, MSN, Xfire, AIM

Internet browsing/downloading

Once in a while I like to open Photoshop, render movies, and code websites.

I have about $1,000 to spend on a new desktop. I'm coming from a 4.5 year-old machine (Athlon XP 3200, 1gb ram, 160 gb hdd, Radeon x800 gto2, 350 watt psu (-.-).)

I have been planning a new PC for a while, and I am finally ready to purchase one. So I did some research, and here's what I got:

CD/DVD Drive

Case

Hard Drive

Motherboard

GPU

PSU

Memory

CPU

Total comes out to $968

Please tell me what you think.

Have you considered getting an Intel Dual Core CPU instead, they are slightly faster.

It's a very nice case you've picked out too :P
The XMS2 series RAM is also very good and the GPU is a very good card also!

Yeah I know C2D is better than the AM2 line, but would I get better for the same money if I were to purchase a C2D system instead?

Yes,You would be better going for a C2D right now...just get a e6300 @ 1.86Ghz and im sure with a good mobo and cooler you can overclock it to 2.8 - 3Ghz i suppose.

Yeah, I think it really is worth going for an Intel CPU, especially since the prices are coming down on April 22nd.

Yeah, I would try it with-out OC'ing first because OC'ing voids the warranty which isn't all that good, so you may want to not OC for a couple of weeks just to make sure it works fine first :)

Stick with what you originally had and get an E6300 and a decent LGA775 motherboard, something like a Gigabyte DS3, or S3.

Then you'd have a great PC :D

Well.

I was told that an AMD 4200 is comparable to an E6300. I put a 4600 in the machine, and to my knowledge, it seems as though the 4600 is a better CPU than the E6300.

Yeah mean an AMD 4200 X2?
Anyway, The Intel dual core CPU's do perform better and are better value for money.

Take a look at http://www.computerforum.com/629647-post10.html

Overall a better performing system with a similar pricetag.

Yeah, They would be a LOT better for an extra couple of $'s.

I'm not gonna purchase till like early May- mid May.

I heard C2D prices are going to drop this month, so maybe it IS a better idea?

The 8800GTS may be expensive. since you ar building in May, Consider another cheaper DirectX 10 GPU at that time. I don't think the 7950 is a good choice.

How much is the price going to drop though?

around 30% on each E6XXX amd around a 40% for the quad core q6600

Maybe you could possibly help me with another issue.

I am currently running:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
ATI Radeon X800 GTO2
1GB Ram
160GB HDD

Initially I had only 512 MB ram and an Integrated card.

I never upgraded the PSU, and ever since I upgraded, my PC restarts when I open a game like Counter Strike and things like that. So I tried taking out my video card, and everything was running almost perfetly, except that the screen was very "sketchy", meaning like things were really hard to see cause of blurryness.

I would like to be able to play games during my spring break, which is this week, but I cannot do anything.

So I am asking what you think I should do?

Maybe I could turn off my GPU? Any way to do that without unplugging it?
