leaving computer on for long periods

dont u guys turn off your comp when there is a thunderstorm because i know my cousin left his comp on in a thunderstorm and when he came back from shopping his whole comp was dead and burnt

Reasons for leaving computer on over long periods. What's the point if you have no reason ?

+ None
- Electricity usage
- As above, thunderstorms with chance of it being fried
- I have a TV tuner card with aerial on the roof, chance of a lightening strike while I'm away, no thanks.

If I'm away for a few days I switch off, pull the plug and pull out the aerial plug.

you guys are acting like these things could only happen when your not home.

a surge and power outage can happen even when its sunny out, and even when your at home on the pc and its sunny out. thats what surge protectors are for, if you have a pc and don't have it on one your just asking for trouble. you can also get a lightnbing strike when your home. it wont only happen when your away.

if its going to happen, it'll happen. it doesn't matter what the weather is, it doesen't matter if your not home.
even if your home and lightning strikes, or theres a surge, or your hard drive crashes or cpu overheats and breaks. being at home wont make the damage magicly go away, your pc will still be screwed.

and tft, if lightning strikes your antennea when your not home do you really think having it or your pc unplugged will help? the 10 million volt spark of lightning just travelled tens of thousands of feet to get to your antennea. it'll easily jump from that wire to your houses wiring and fry every device in the house. it'll also probably overload the antennea wire and any other wires causing many fires to start inside the walls of the house. then, with you not being home, you could loose the pc anyway.

but, it probably wouldn't strike the antennea unless its the tallest thing in mile radius. lighting strikes the closest thing the sky, which could easily be a tree.

You expect me to believe a surge protector will come through a direct lightening stike, no way the whole lot will fry.

Lightening needs to find the shortest route to earth so chances are it will fry all the house electrical circuit and anything that's plugged into it. Worst case scenario the whole house goes up computer and all :)

first of all u dont care because its not your money or computer which is going to get fryed

and second of all when your house gets hit by lighting its gets grounded so it dosent fry your house

and third of all some houses has built in plug so when it thunderstorms the whole house power will turn off so in the end there no point of leaving the comp on
