i posted a while back about how i was getting some free parts from someone. and it turns out the stuff is really old and hes not sure if most of it works. im new to building computers. so i pretty much am learning as i go. i now know that i dont want any of you guys to worry about the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or the case. I will handle all of this myself. however i do need you guys help on everything else. I would say i have around an 700$-750$ budget on this machine. Im not a gamer i just want an all around fast computer to download, play music, surf the internet, and do normal tasks for school etc. but the main thing i want is speed. so if you guys could maybe help me find some parts and maybe get me some links that would be great.

any questions just ask

you might want to let us know what parts you have first so we can advise on upgrades, otherwise we have nothing to work on??

if it really is "old" then how old?? pentium 2 , 3 etc

sdr memory/ddr memory ?

what psu(power supply unit) has it got? probably about a 350/400watt , you would want something around 600watt nowadays with modern componants.

you would/might be better off buying a motherboard bundle from newegg and using your case/ hard drive depending on age and size of course.

can you post some specs and pictures?

as far as the insides of the computer i dont have any parts. im starting from scratch on the insides. i already have the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and vista.

i need your help with whats going in my case. can you give me some links on motherboard bundles, hard drives, power supply, and everything else that i need to buy to build my computer?

Unless you're really set on getting your hands dirty, piecing the computer altogether yourself...which I personally think is half the fun of computers, you could go to http://www.ibuypower.com. I purchased a friends computer with a good case and power supply, a decent chipset with a gig of ram, 256 video card, and camera to boot, for less than 600 ( a dual core mind you). You pick the parts, but they put it together. Otherwise newegg.com is the way to go.

I think the most cost effective way is to build it yourself, you are definitely paying a premium if you buy a packaged one.

i like the first one that was posted up. very nice proc and a very good video card too, it'll take anything a non gamer could ever possibly throw at it

if i decided to go with the "cheaper" version froboy posted. could i use the cpu from the first one(core 2 duo E6660) with all the other parts from the cheaper one. Pretty much just upgrade the cpu?

also i was looking at all of these parts deciding what im wanting. i really like all of the setups but the video card for the cheaper computer says the OS its compatible with is XP and i have vista to put on my new computer. could you give me a vista capable card similar in price?

As I have said before, EVEN a geforce TNT works with Vista, so you don't have to worry about a graphics card not being compatible. Just because it wasn't designed for Vista doesn't means its not going to work.

I just realised I put in an extra 6 in the processor :( it's actually the E6600:P

Yes you can switch the processors

i just read a forum that said vista uses tons of ram. if i build this computer(the cheaper one above) will my cp be slow. or will i have plenty enough ram?

ok heres some pics of the case i got my hands on. i like the case. its nothing fancy its just a plain ole case. and thats what i wanted. let me know if this case will work with the build i plan to do.

let me know if this case is good enough.

thanks

Yeah the case will work. You just might want to measure the space in it where the motherboard will go to determine if you can fit a full size atx board.
