I was given this advice...
I want you to re-seat (Take the RAM out and put it back in) the RAM by following the instructions here. Make sure you turn off the laptop, remove the battery, and unplug the power supply. On Page 4 it shows you how to open the access panel and remove/ install the ram. Also while you are here gently blow out any dust either with canned air or an air compressor.

Once you had the RAM re-seated you can put the access panel back on, put the battery in, plug in the power supply. Turn on the computer with the WinXP CD in the drive and do the following:
Boot your system with the XP cd in the drive, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose "R" to run the Recovery Console.
You will be presented with a command prompt (like DOS, black background white text)
Now, type in the following commands pressing Enter after each line.
md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system
Make sure you type these commands exactly as I have shown you.
Now reboot the computer, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and run the following commands.
md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software
Now reboot again and hopefully your problem will be fixed. Good luck.
If this does not work you can try the whole procdure here:

I started the steps. Got the ram reseated....rebooted with disk....got to the dos like prompt. When I get there tho, it only lets me type one character at the prompt so I was told to type "1" to enter that installation. Once I do it starts the fading back and forth again.
Any ideas?!
