My hp laptop (that is less than a year old!) wont start up. It goes through all of the screens like it is going to start windows then it just starts fading from black to white, back and forth.

I dont know ANYTHING about comps, but I did manage to test the hard drives, both of which past the tests. I also tried starting in safe mode and booting from the cd and starting in the last known good configuration. Nothing works!

Someone please help!!

One more thing....I was told by someone else to try reseating the video card...will this help? If so, how do I do it?

Then DON'T open up a laptop.

Less than a year old, call HP and ship it back. Laptops are very difficult to work on, and very easy to screw up if you don't have all the background knowledge. I won't touch them myself.

no, i dont think its the video card, so dont touch that. i would first check on the warranty situation before tinkering anymore.

welcome to Computer Forum, by the way.

That happened to a 20" LCD monitor I purchased when I RMAed and got a new one it worked fine

it sounds like it may be the transformer for the monitor. when does it start to flicker? does it start at a particular point, or is it more random? it could also the the GPU, but that is less likely. please post your laptop model (im gunna throw out a guess: dv9000?)

Close....its a dv8000!

I would rather not work on it myself....in fact, Im not going to. I am going to take it to one of my more computer savy friends. I would just like to get an idea of what it may be.

It does start at a certain point tho. Just after the "Windows XP" screen where it should switch to the screen where you choose which user you want to go in as, then it starts fading.

okay, good luck! post back and tell us what he thinks

I was given this advice...

I want you to re-seat (Take the RAM out and put it back in) the RAM by following the instructions here. Make sure you turn off the laptop, remove the battery, and unplug the power supply. On Page 4 it shows you how to open the access panel and remove/ install the ram. Also while you are here gently blow out any dust either with canned air or an air compressor.

Once you had the RAM re-seated you can put the access panel back on, put the battery in, plug in the power supply. Turn on the computer with the WinXP CD in the drive and do the following:

Boot your system with the XP cd in the drive, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose "R" to run the Recovery Console.

You will be presented with a command prompt (like DOS, black background white text)
Now, type in the following commands pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Make sure you type these commands exactly as I have shown you.

Now reboot the computer, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and run the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software

Now reboot again and hopefully your problem will be fixed. Good luck.

If this does not work you can try the whole procdure here:

I started the steps. Got the ram reseated....rebooted with disk....got to the dos like prompt. When I get there tho, it only lets me type one character at the prompt so I was told to type "1" to enter that installation. Once I do it starts the fading back and forth again.

Any ideas?!
