End Program - sw

My wife's computer is now displaying a window that says "End Program - sw" whenever we try to shut the computer down. Anybody know what that is and why its suddenly showing up? She is running Windows 2000.

Something autoloading along with Windows is the problem seen there. This is seen when a program fails to close out when not in use and going to shut down the system. You have to go into the msconfig utility to see what is listed as startup items and try unchecking a few non essentials.

The program may need to be removed and reinstalled if necessary in order to see this corrected. Otherwise disabling it there when known should see an end to the prompts.

Can you walk me through the process to access the msconfig utility? Also, what constitutes a non essential program? Just give me some examples so I have an idea what I'm doing.
Thank you!

sw.exe
Spyware.SilentSpy
It is a software program that monitors all the actions on local and networked computers.

Adds the value: "SSConfig" = "SW.exe"
to the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Adds the subkey: "SW"
to the registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Enum

Adds the value: "0" = "SW\{B7EAFDC0-A680-11D0-96d8-00AA0051E51D}\{9B365890-165F-11D0-A195-0020AFD156E4}"
to the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\kmixer\Enum

Creates the following files:
C:\Silent-Spy.cnt
C:\Silent-Spy.hlp
C:\Wlp.sys
C:\Wlg.sys
C:\SW.htm
Creates the folder C:\SSS, which stores screenshots that the spyware captures.

Captures and logs the following items:
- Every window that you open and interacted with.
- All of the Web site titles and addresses that you visit.
- All the keystrokes and windows in which the keystrokes were entered.
- Periodic screen shots.
See if an online scan (http://housecall.trendmicro.com or http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner or http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html there are others as well) can clean it up for you. Or you could go and delete the registry keys and what not your self just be careful of what you delete.

That could also be another rather old program using Scrolling Windows with sw seen. Information on that can be seen at http://www.netlib.org/ampl/student/mswin/readme.sw

RegCleaner was mentioned in a thread with the same instructions seen above for removing those entries. With that opens up to a main window any non MS programs are displayed. When you have to manually remove something you simply place a check next to the main key and click on the remove button next to the exit at the bottom right. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

RegCleaner also includes an automatic registry cleanup as well as a link for opening the regedit tool in the "tools" dropdown menu found on the menu bar at the top. Running a search for sw.exe would be one way to see what folder it is found in before trying any manual edits of the registry.

Another freeware that will give you a good breakdown of the softwares as well as hardwares installed is the System Info for Windows(SIW) tool found at http://www.gtopala.com/siw_on_pc_world.html You would have to see if this will install and work on 2000 however.
