Newb looking for some guidance

Hello computer geeks,

Let me start by stating my computer IQ: Not much.

I can get around the internet, hook up simple hardware (scanners, printers, etc.), navigate windows pretty well (but could definitely use some help on some stuff) , but software and such I don't really know much about. I'm interested in building my own PC after seeing some really cool custom built ones at a friends house. Obviously I need to read and research before going about this daunting task. For this first time in my life I'm actually interested in computers and really pimpin out my own system.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (links, or a good book preferably) as to where to look to master the basic of hardware and software before I attempt to build my own system?

Thanks! :D

Hello Oscar,

Budget is probably around 2K. I mainly use my computer for searching the internet and listening to music. However, I think if I had a cool system I would like to try my hand at other things like gaming (a little!) and perhaps some other fun stuff that my wee mind doesn't know exists in the computer world...

Hello Rsheehan,

$2000 is overkill for internet and music. An $350 or $500 rig could do that. If you could specify some games that have caught your eye..

you won't need to send 2k for what you do, 1k-ish should do just fine for a mild gaming rig.

Thanks everyone.

A couple of games caught my eye including Medal of Honor: Airborne, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Half Life 2.

Also a quick question (that may open a can of worms, I don't know): AMD vs. Intel for general all around use and minor gaming?

Intel is has the better processors in market right now. Do you live in the US?
