i need a new 2.5 notebok Hdd and have just came across a pata drive and sata drive. what is the difference and which one is faster?

Thanks :)

sata hdds have a 1cm width cable and a pata has a 2" ribon cable the same sort that you would use to install a dvd drive in a normal pc anyway sata is a later technoligy and is faster.

3Gbps is the raw interface speed, the effective speed is a tad lower. And still, it is only the interface (to the buffer), the drive cannot read data off the platters that quickly.

hmmm so my laptop may not support pata? its sata at the mo :)
If your laptop has SATA, then you can only use a SATA hard drive with it.

yea, sata transfer rates are 3.0gb/s, pretty darn fast
Most SATA laptop drives are still SATA 150. Even the ones that are 3.0Gb/s, thats not anywhere near the actual transfer rate you get. Theoretically you can get up to 384MBps, however you generally dont get any more then 100-150MBps on a 7200RPM desktop hard drive.

The actual number of bytes you can transfer is 20% lower than the raw speed of 3.0Gb/s, due to encoding overhead. That equals to 300 MB/s
