Pop-up messages - viruses or authentic?

I keep getting pop-ups from "Messenger Service" that my registry is corrupted and that I need to immediately download www.registrycleanerxp.com. I also get a second one which tells me to download www.wreg32.com. I don't know if these are legitimate messages or maybe some kind of virus or adware. I have Windows 2000 Professional installed on this computer. These things pop-up constantly. Does anyone know what these messages are?

  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

Anyway Novice2000 go ahead and do what Jabes told you to do. It's probably a SmitFraud infection.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Now go in safe mode and select option 2. That will get rid of the SmitFraud Infection.

How do I go into Safe Mode? Also, what infection do I have? Because I don't know how to read the HJT. What is there now that shouldn't be there when I get rid of it?

Ok, I figured out how to boot up in Safe Mode. I just did what you said. The only thing is that at the end when I was asked if I wanted the registry cleaned, I replied with yes by selecting "y" and pressing "Enter". Then I got the following message:

"Cannot import cleanup.reg: Error accessing the registry."

No lol I'm just asking a fellow member to make sure I didn't miss anything on your log.

You had a smitfraud infection, which makes windows pop-up to ask you to buy and scan your computer when there is no problem at all. We got rid of it.

Do you still have problems on your computer?

No, the pop-ups stopped after you told me to go into safe mode and pick option 2. Thank you. I really appreciate your help.

Also, what line of code showed the infection? In case I have to deal with this again?

Also, I went into safe mode by noticing at the bottom of the screen when I would boot up that it said to press F8 for the startup menu. I originally went to "Run" and typed in "msconfig", because I know that's one way of booting into safe mode. I received an error though when I tried getting into msconfig which said this:

"Cannot find file 'msconfig' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

Why isn't "Run" letting me go into msconfig?
 
That I don't know sorry (msconfig).

If you have that problem again, I suggest you post here, the tools we use are really powerful and if they're not used properly it can result in serious damage to your computer. And we provide help for free so I don't see why you wouldn't come back :P
