Need Help deciding on a processor

Theoridically the athlon 6000 would be faster than core 2 duoe 6550, accordingly to tomshardware. But you would expec more users to go with the intel platform as it has better overclocking capabilities and conserve more power. On another point to note you could get better motherboard chipsets when you make friends with intel.

yeah, according to tom's hardware the 6000+ and the e6550 are really close. I personally like the e6550 because it has a faster front side bus, so if you get 1333 RAM (might be a while) the machine will definitely be faster than the 6000+ with pc6400 RAM.

Faster then what? The AMD X2's dont use an FSB, they use HT, which is much faster then Intel's current FSB.

the abbreviation for hypertransport is HTT. and i am well aware of the differences. in two identically clocked systems HTT is technically faster than FSB, however this is actually speculation since the full potential of each is yet to be discovered. my point was based solely on CPU <--> RAM throughput, which an e6550 with RAM that has a 1:1 ratio would undoubtedly be faster than a 6000+ with pc6400 RAM. HTT does allow for faster communication between system components, but there is no need for it. you can make a road as wide and smooth as you want to, but what the race comes down to is how fast the cars are...trust me, neither AMD nor intel are having their overall computer speed slowed down by the bus they use...

Just a thought for you , I have a friend who has the 6000+ and has had nothing but problems with it , he is on his second different mobo and still can't control the heat and get it to run stable. Since you don't overclock have you considered the E6850 it's the same speed as the 6000?

It's also 300$.... and it comes out to be much faster. If you were to spend 300$ it would be much better to get a q6600 instead.

What about the 6750? That's faster than the 6000 for close to the same price.

looking at new egg prices you can get a 6000+ for 159.99 the E6850 which has the same core clock speed is 279.99, you get 2 more mb of L2 cache but its not worth is

The 2 im having trouble deciding between are the 6000 and the E6550, the 6000, is faster but Ive heard it takes more power and gives of more heat.

I am going to throw a monkey wrench in the middle. I have installed 2 6000 and didnt like either one, they default at 1.4 voltage, run hotter, 125 watt max. and have a odd X and runs the ram at 750/375 instead of 800/400. I installed about 5 X2 5600 and they defaulted at either 1.30 or 1.325 voltage, 89 watt max, have a even X so the ram runs at 400/800, runs cooler and all of them would overclock just as well as the X2 6000 with less voltage.

Why worry about heat as long as it runs stable? Plenty of cpus out there that are overkill for gaming so it's not that hard to choose.
