Laptop Video Card?

:( I have a dell laptop with 64mb shared memory. I can set it to like 128mb, but performance is not good. I was wondering if there is a way to upgrade a laptop's video or graphics memory -are they the same?- and if so, can it be done by getting pci card ram? I have a program that told me i have a "pci express root port". I think it is on the side of my computer, with a little logo that looks like a card with lines on the side. So i have three questions.

1. Was that a pci express card slot?
2. Can laptops with integrated video memory get more by using the pci slots?

1. No, PCMCIA

2. You can upgrade a DEDICATED video card, not a INTEGRATED video card

3. Up to 3.25GB for a 32bit. 128GB for 64bit... Probably 3GB for you maximum. Take out the old sticks and put in the new sticks of RAM :)

You have Nvidia's 6150 Go GFX. Not bad, better than mine. Able to play quite a few games, maybe even COD4 or more. You can have up to 288MB shared memory.

I suggest taking the GFX memory down to 32 or 64. Your's is probably integrated, thus taking memory from your RAM, and thus slowing your computer down due to lack of resources and memory.

Are you sure that the little rectangle with the lines is a pcmcia?

--| | <-- that line is supposed to line up
--|_____|? If it is a pcmcia, I will probably get something else to put there. PLEASE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF SLOT IT IS, AS I WILL BE GETTING SOMETHING TO GO THERE SOON!

Also, I only have the ability to set my video ram to 128mb on the startup thing. Will this change to 288 when I install 2gb of ram instead of 1gb? - dont expect a responce from mee for atlease 3 hours as i am going to see a movie

PCMCIA ^^

LAPPY PCI-E (down)

ok, if my computer has two pcie slots, a 34 and 54, I will either get a hard drive to go there , or wait until I can get an mxm graphics card. How long do you think this will be, and can i eventually get an updated graphics card for my compaq v6210us?

You don't have two PCI-E cards in your laptop, they would either be PCMCIA or ExpressCard.

First, hard drives don't go in the expansion slot. They are connected using an IDE or SATA connector (laptop style), and go in a different bay.

Second, MXM cards only go on the motherboard, if the motherboard has a removable MXM-compatible slot. Many video cards for laptops use proprietary slots/versions which aren't interchangeable.

ok, one last question. No, two. Three. Four. Five.

1. I can only set my shared vram to 128mb on startup. Will this increase to 256 when i install another gig of ram? (1gb ram now)

2. If I set it to 256mb vram/graphics ram, will the performance be AT LEAST as good as a nvidia or ati 128mb card?

3. What is the difference between graphics and video ram?

4. What i meant by hard drive, I meant the really expensive solid state's {eg 64gb for $1000, so not an option for me :(}

5. If someone has the time and patience to answer all of these dumb questions, what pci/pcie/pcmcia ect slots does a compaq v6210us laptop have? Please be specific, eg "1x pcmcia".

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the dumbness

oh, oscaryu1, I would NEVER decrease my vram

1. You have to set it manually

2. Maybe. Lack of memory is bad, but a bad/old card itself may not help alot...

3. Their the same. :) I think you mean dedicated and integrated VRAM right?

4. What? What's solid state?

5. PCMCIA and those rest are just expansion slots to put some cards and stuff in :)

No it won't, whatever the max you can set now is, is the most you can set it to regardless of RAM.

2. If I set it to 256mb vram/graphics ram, will the performance be AT LEAST as good as a nvidia or ati 128mb card?
Nope. Video memory is only a small factor when it comes to performance. Honestly, if you set it to 64MB or 256MB (if possible), you won't notice a difference.

3. What is the difference between graphics and video ram?
Not really sure what you mean, graphics memory and video memory are the same thing.

I wouldn't use any more then 128MB, however you can probably get away with 64MB. The reason being because you have more available system RAM.

Now I saw this on the HP site regarding your laptop: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (UMA) with up to 288MB (shared video memory)

ok, first, solid state drives can go in pcmia or pcie things like that. They are very expensive. google em.

second, why is my computer able to have up to 288mb vram if you can only set it to 128 when you start up? How do I make it have the full amount "after i install another gig"

I know about SSD's. They can be connected via SATA, IDE, or ExpressCard.

I don't know why you can't set it to the full amount, you should be able to with 1GB. But as I've said before, when/if you set it to the full amount, it wont make the card any better then it is now with 128MB of RAM.

ok, all of my questions will be answered when this one is.

What exactly does the compaq v6210us have in terms of card slots? I want to know exact numbers, and exact type. Example : 1x pci express, 1xpcmcia :o

I want to help you, but the HP website doesn't go into detail on that. I'm sure some other sites do, so you may want to look around a bit.

ok, the specs are kinda easy to find, but what do they mean?

Expansion Slots Total (Free)
2 ( 0 ) x Memory - SO DIMM 200-pin, 1 ( 1 ) x ExpressCard/54

does that mean i can use two ram sticks and one express card?
if so, does the express card 54 mean i can use a size 34 and 54?
