Pith: Verb, to destroy the spinal cord or brain of; to slaughter, as cattle, by severing the spinal cord.

In this case it is your hard drive :D. in simple mans terms how often do you get fed up with all the junk and insert the reload os dvd?

for me it is often. VERY often. like every 2 months or less :D

I used to curse at the old Pentium all the time... And now I can't curse at my hardware, so I just curse at Microsoft...

i do not format at all these days.
probably every 3 months or so depends if i have a problem.
These days i only use a 40Gb drive and install whatever linux os i get

I basically wait till Windows crashes and gives me so many problems that it's unbearable. Once, maybe twice a year.

lol about every other month. I switch it between windows and ubuntu. I get pissed off at one and install the other :D
Once i get a decent computer, ill probably do it like once or twice a year.

I only reformat when my computer gets ridiculously slow or hard to deal with because I didn't maintain it like I should have. I just built a new one though so hopefully I'll maintain this one better than my past mistakes. Probably about once a year.

Years for me. I had the same windows install for a good 3 years, I even changed motherboards with it. I formatted a few months back and it will probably be another few years before I do again.

With my new rig I hope I never have to, because I'll be dual booting Vista and Ubuntu W/ Compiz Fusion. Now I do it any time I get a virus =D

It was usually 2 weeks... There's something wrong with me :( If something goes wrong in installation... then I reformat again :D So far, this HDD (around... 1995 model or so) is awesome :) 20GB only, and running with a CD drive (older than the HDD) so it runs around ATA33? And it runs FAST.

s awesome 20GB only, and running with a CD drive (older than the HDD) so it runs around ATA33?
It runs at what ever speed is full for it (probably ata100 or 133). The ATA controller can switch between speeds to talk to the different drives. It can only talk to one at a time though so while the CD drive is in use the hard drive will seem slower.

I usually reinstall an OS for one of three reasons. The most likely reason is because I bought new hardware and I need to reinstall, or I do something to interfere with the OS and it becomes unbootable, or I just want to switch back to XP from Vista or vice versa :)

I put once a year... I only do it if I make a new build or on the rare occasion that it gets so messed up that I can't do anything with it. If it's just running a bit slow that's easy to clean up, and I haven't got a virus that I couldn't get rid of in forever.

as an OEM person I've learned to deal with problems and just learned how to fix em (as I rarely get recovery disks from manufacturers). I've only done it once, and that was when I first got XP. Until about 2 months ago my parents had a Win98 machine running for about 6 years without any reformats... it took a lot of work to keep that baby going ;)
