Hey guys, im a complete noob to this, but i want a nice rig and i can spend around 1000, and if i wait 2 months, maybe 2000 so shoot me some builds or idea, greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Search around the forums. this is probably the most common question.

(edit, sorry if this sounded disrespectful, didnt mean it like that. Just saying that quickly you could find a general build idea then ask specific questions)

Ok, thanks for the input, I'll run a search.

Sorry.
well, i guess i was kinda wrong.
I spoke before i acted.
couldnt find much with a quick search.

In that 1000, do you need OS, Keyboard Mouse, Monitor?

Basic outline:

Intel Quad Core
4 GB of Ram
ATI 3870 or nVidia 8800 GT

Not sure on the specifics of 45 nms but i believe they will be commming out in around 2 months.

Ignore this computer...its AMD. You want an Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad. He's also suggesting you buy an 8800GTS 640mb..which is outdated compared to the similarly priced 8800GTS 512Mb(its better, search it up) or the 8800GT which isn't far off of it for alot cheaper.

so intel is better than amd? or what?

Currently, Intel processors are better than AMD's offerings.

Processor: Q6600 $277.99

HSF: Zalman 9700 $59.99

TP: MX-2 $6.99

Mainboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3L $99.99

Memory: 2GB XMS2 $37.99 after MIR

GPU: G92 8800 GTS + Crysis $339.99 after MIR or the 8800 GT + Company of Heroes $269.99

PSU: CM Real Power 850W $69.95 after MIR

HD: Seagate 250GB $64.99

OD: Asus $32.99

Case: That's up to you. ;)

Total cost with the GTS: $990.87 before S/H, and after MIR's

Total cost with the GT: $920.87 before S/H, and after MIR's

Feel free to substitute the Radeon HD 3870 for the GTS if you need to save $100.

IMO That's a absolutely great build. Boo to Lightscribe :D:D

Although, get 2x of this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220144

CL4, and it's 1 cent cheaper than XMS2. 20% faster too ;)

Unless you enjoy a few hours of frustration, do NOT get the antec 900.

Yes it does a great job of cooling a system, and it looks nice. But it is one of the worst designed cases currently being sold for anyone that has little to no knowledge of putting together a computer, or has limited skills.

Trust me, and do some searches on this forum on the Antec 900. Stay away from the Antec 900!

lol. Get over it, Oscar. :P

Yeah, that's good RAM too.

20% faster too ;)

If you're referring to the latencies, those can be manually set to 4-4-4-12 in the BIOS. On some boards, you have to do that anyway.

What would you recommend as an alternative?

BTW, the MIR on the PSU I recommended is good if you buy by Dec. 31. In other words, you have two days to buy it if you want that deal. If you don't plan on buying by then, get this PSU: OCZ 700W

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the Radeon 3870's specifications appear to be better than the G92 8800 GTS. Performance-wise, does the ATi card beat the nVidia card? For now, I've removed the 8800 from the list and replaced with the 3870.

No it doesn't. Just because the speeds are faster doesn't mean that it's really faster...

Is AMD's Sempron 2600+ (1.6) equivalent to a Intel 1.6? Nope! They're equivalent to Intel's 2.4GHz...

Obviously. Cache sizes are dramatically different between the two, for example.

They're equivalent to Intel's 2.4GHz...

In addition to the faster speeds, the Radeon has 320 bit stream processors compared to the 8800's 128. That's a 250% difference. The Radeon is also $105 cheaper. Currently, the only advantage I see with the 8800 is the ability to run SLi and the free Crysis game. I'll look up some benchmarks between the two cards.

EDIT: According to the benchmarks I've read, both the 8800 GTS and GT perform better than the 3870. Looks something like this: 8800 GTS > 8800 GT > 3870

They're all good cards; it's really dependent on your budget. ;)

I wouldn't say either is better than the other. My reason of going for the 3870 are its 55nm, GDDR4 (i think its samsung) and currently the GT/GTS are using some ram i havn't heard of before and are having alot of problems (not all cards have the problems, obviously more faulty ram than there should be). The 3870 overclocks better and is shipped with a better cooler. From what i have seen in reviews, the 3870 seems to give a better picture and wants to render more things off into a distance with more detail than the 8800 would. But that could be due to drivers, im no expert. ;)

the 8800 is better.

Thats a biased answer.
