Is this standard operating procedure or am I being jacked around?

I have an HP desk top PC that I purchased new in June 2007.
4 times since June I have had to return it to the Circuit Cuty Store where I bought it to have it checked out because it has an error message and a black screen saying "boot disk failure. Insert system disc and press enter."

It is locked up and nothing works.

It has been sent back to HP and returned un-:mad:repaired and now I am told that I have to have it sent back again and wait 2 more weeks and see if they fix it this time. They said if it happens again they will think about replacing it.

It this acceptable!?

I think not but I may be wrong.

yes that is standard, is it acceptable? I would say not really, but then again you can take your HP to any HP authorized repair center. Try a Frys or a Microcenter, they probably have better service.

Sounds to me like you got a faulty hard drive. They should replace it for you, the thing is about doing it yourself is that they need to install the OS for you, because now prebuilt computers only come with a quick restore disk and if you were to try and do it yourself, chances are you would wind up need to spend $120 for another disk, unless HP would provide it for you. But chances on that are slim to none :(

Someone else may have another idea, but i know when a hard drive is shot, i get that error. Or i guess some data could be corrupted, but it looks like it has happend too many times.

someone should give another opinion, if they think the same, call HP and tell them that you think your hard drive toast ;)

EDIT: yeah, go to somewere like frys or microcenter, they will normally fix it under the manufactures warranty

You have a bad hard drive. They should know that, and replace it. I would not be happy about this situation. You said you've returned it 4 times since then, and they still haven't figured out it's a bad hard drive? completely unacceptable IMO. I'd be pissed... this is a quick and easy fix, all you need is a new hard drive.

If it does infact say "boot disk failure" it is a faulty HDD. Tell them you want a new hard drive and don't settle for less. Your computer should still be under warranty and just tell them you are fed up with this and to please replace the hard drive.

Run a HDD diagnostic wizard and scan for errors or anything like that. I'm agreeing on the bad HDD part.

It is unacceptable. Now you see the goodness of buying a prebuilt :D

with a prebuilt it gets fixed for you, if you build it yourself you are on your own for calling the company, pleading with them to send you a replacement so you can RMA the defective one. They may even call abuse on the situation and even deny your warranty.

it works both ways.

don't know if they still do it, but HP used to send out system restore discs for i think just the cost of shipping. you would just need the HP serial number from the back of the computer. along with its model so you could order it from the HP site.

Good news!

I explained my situation to the store manager and he gave me a brand new computer.:)

thanks for all the input.
