hey guys i was just wondering, becuase i lost the disk of my game but i still have the case and the CD key.. so is there anyway i can get like a copy of the game without the CD Key? is there a way to do that? or possibly download one

actually, there is nothing illegal about copying a friend's disk or something like that. you can even download it, as long as you have a legit CD key

Actually they are all illegal (according to USA law anyway) Any dissemination of copied software/media/games is illegal, whether for profit or not, even if the recipient has a CD key. Look at the copyright info next time you watch a movie. Only time you can copy anything is for your own personal use (backup, or for transfer to a different device, aka ipod) and the RIAA is working to make that illegal too.

well, i am having a tough time finding support for my argument, but i am still pretty sure you can install a game off of another CD as long as you have your own, legal CD key. can you find documentation otherwise? i am just curious

If you check the EULA of any game, it usually states either or. Some dictate that copying is illegal in any way, some say ONE (or so) backups can be made. Hell, most EULA's even disallow selling your game used, to anyone, they consider your purchase a very elaborate "rental".

Some current games (like bioshock) disallow using a backup disc for install, though I don't know if the same is true for play.

Call the company...

If you have the box/receipt/cd key for any game on steam, and you lose the disk, you can ask for a new disk. Perhaps its only steam, but other companies may do it too :).

its somewhat recent copyright laws (recent as in within the past few years)

even if you own a game/movie/cd, its illegal to copy it.
any type of media change or replication violates the copyright.

Title 17 said:
Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, rental or digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings. The FBI investigates allegations of criminal copyright infringement and violators will be prosecuted.

That's what applies for music and movies

Sega Enterprises v. MAPHIA said:
The unauthorized copying of copyrighted computer programs is . . . an infringement of the copyright . . . . nauthorized copies . . . are made when such games are uploaded to the BBS [Bulletin Board Service] . . . [and] when they are downloaded to make additional copies by users . . .

Not true. Look up the laws. It is perfectly legal to copy it as long as it stays in your possession. No giving, lending, selling, uploading to the internet, etc. However, the RIAA is attempting to make this illegal too with limiting things such as Itunes songs to a certain number of devices, and things like that.

Basically the answer is that for music/movies no, but it may be different for a game. I would recommend calling the company, if you are really that concerned about staying legal. If you're not...then why are you here again? ;)

i mean, obviously you cannot give the game away. i just think it should be ok, like in the situation of the OP, to install a game using a friend's CD and put your own cd key in when its time. two copies of the game were purchased, two copies are being used, they just happen to be installed from the same disk (which is identical across the world anyway). the only thing that distinguishes software is the license, and the OP has a legit license (or so he claims). i hate all this junk with these copyright laws. if it really is illegal to install a game from any other disk than the one that was packaged with the CD key, i think that is tyranny.
