Western Digital Raptor?

I was doing some research because, I need a new hard drive because my 80 Gb IDE just isn't doing it for me. I was looking at the Western Digital Raptors. I understand that these are fast 10000rpm drives, and expensive I might add. I kinda have a budget of $100. So I noticed they only made 3 models. The 36gb, 74gb, and 150gb. My first thought was, who in the hell had this idea to make such great drives in such small capacity.
Also, they're very expensive, but is the 10000rpm really worth the speed. I do some gaming, make and play music, and do internet surfing and thats about it. But, I also want something that is fast, reliable, and will last for about 5 years. Im just thinking about buying like a 320gb SATA rather than a 74 gb Raptor. If someone can convience me the science behind making such small, fast drives, I would be thankful.

rpm/capacity vs cost ratio, they are not worth the price. you can get a 7200 rpm 500GB for about $100. if you're willing to spend the money for a tiny performance increase, then do so, but it's not really worth it IMO

Thanks, Im really no hard-core gamer but I do like to have my computer stay fast, You know? Im definetly just going for a Caviar at 320gb, Thanks Alot.

lmao. A Caviar vs. a Raptor. haha. Absolutely NO contest. A Caviar is a light duty, casual home use piece of junk that likes corrupting the MFT. The Raptor is an enterprise class solution. Hmmm. You want reliability? You want almost ANYTHING but a Caviar. I repair 1 or 2 Caviars a week. Raptors? They have a duty cycle that will simply destroy the Caviar. You can practically throw a Raptor across the room and it will still work. You do that to a Caviar and it's a paperweight.

I currently have 2 x 150gb raptor and I have another chance of purchasing 2 more 150's for $200 for both. Is it possible to raid these extra two drives and mirror my stripe set? I hope this makes sense.

i have a caviar, a 160gig HD. ive reformatted it multiple times, partitioned it multiple times, and ive even thrown it out a window. its flawless, no errors whatsoever...so maybe i got lucky with mine?

Some people will get a small HD and use it ONLY for the OS and use a second drive for all data.

That will keep your HD from being a issue with "FAST"

i currently have two raptors in RAID 0, but before that i only had one. i love the raptor, i definitely saw a performance increase, and i would recommend it to anyone. it is very expensive, but it is all around a great investment. keep in mind that they make a lot of heat, and they do have a higher failure rate than most 7200 RPM drives because they spin so much more, but they are excellent drives. i vote you should get the raptor

THE RAPTOR ALL THE WAY!!!! my friend just got one and from the time they turn on the computer to the time everything in the tray is loaded is mearly 10-25 seconds

I agree, my friends always raving on about getting 10k drives...but I agree its alot better as far as price goes to just get a 7200. The increase in speed isnt that large.

I have a RaptorX 150 and a Raptor 74 in this computer. They totally slaughter the Caviar SE 160 GB I had in here, in all aspects of performance. I'm not as delighted with the RaptorX as I am with the little one though. They truly are a fantastic drive.

so, installing your OS on one high RPM HDD, all by its lonesome self, can boost performance , mainly speed?

if so, about how much space does 64 bit vista ultimate take up?

Yeah if you want to spend 170 bucks on a drive, get a Raptor 150, dont know about the X model or not, depends on if you want to watch it spin:D. And install the OS on it and get a bigger W/D RE model or a good Samsung Barracuda for keeping all your photos-music-movies and so on.

Samsung Barracuda? hehe :D

That's what I did actually.. The RaptorX for my OS and programs, Raptor 74GB for my swap file and a couple of other tidbits and a Seagate 750GB Barracuda for misc junk. Some of it gets synced with my file server.
