virtual memory

Hi to everybody
whenever I install a new program on my HP Desktop a message popping saying that virtual memory is too low and windows trying to increase it. Any help is appreciated.

Windows needs a certain amount of hard drive available for the paging file used for virtual memory. If your drive is starting to get filled up you may have to clear some drive space or reduce the size of the paging file depending on how the system is used. Some gamers disable that from even being created.

To see a custom size you would right click on the MyComputer icon and click on the system properties>advanced tab followed by the performance button seen there. You then have the option of Windows managed or custom setting the size usually twice that of the total memory installed.

Thanks for the quick reply but I wonder how to reduce the size of the paging file though I cleaned up the disk so many times?

Can anybody tell me how to clear some drive space or reduce the size of the paging file? And how much will be the reduction and according to what?

Your best move would be to get more RAM. 256MB with vista is very low. Your paging file is big because your computer ran out of RAM to store it and has to move stuff to the hard drive until its needed again.

IT is an XP not Vista. Anyway how can I check what memory to buy and what size that you recommend?

delete and empty trash

not reduce but increase. follow this:

And how much will be the reduction and according to what?
on paper people say it's 1.5x of your ram. so 256 x 1.5 = 384

i, however, go against this rule and have mine disabled [you'll need at least 2 gig of ram]. i believe the rule is antiquated althrough many users would say programs still try to use pagefile.

the best solution for you is to buy more RAM. one of us will help you choose which ram and install if you give us more specs... like go to crucial.com and do a system scan. if you can't afford to buy more ram then your only other alternative is to make the pagefile higher. however, this alternative uses hd space and is much slower than ram.

If you have the system in front of you the model number will seen on the HP label on the front of the case. That can be looked up to see the spefications for it and what memory can be used. It's most likely DDR333 or DDR400 memory by the 256mb total.

If you don't have the manual or don't see the model number on the case you can also use a free tool for seeing the detailed information called System Info for Windows(SIW) found at http://www.gtopala.com/ You simply double click on the file once saved to a folder or even create a desktop shortcut since there's no installer just the executable.

It is as follows:
Model: Vectra VL 420MT
Prod: A8943S#ABA

HP's web site is being particularily useless today.

If you go here scroll down and click on "View your system configuration details." I think that will tell you what we need to know. Based on the speed of your CPU I'm guessing you will have PC133 or PC2100

That's understating it a bit! :P

Forget the link there since those are environment notations not product information seen in the pdf files there. I did come across something at EBay with one of the same models being sold there where some posted the specs showing pc100 as the memory used in the 2000-2001 model. http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Vectra-VL400...yZ140072QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Being that old anyone still carrying pc100 and pc133 still charges a good price to see those kept instock.

nobody likes crucial's system scanner?

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

It depends on the OS there. For XP SP2 is required. For Vista you have to download the scanning tool first. For those using another browser besides IE only the download will work.

"You've been redirected from the Crucial System Scanner because we've detected you are running Microsoft® Windows® Vista™. To successfully run the scanner tool using Vista, please download this .exe file, save it, and open it. You will then be redirected back to our Web site, where you can view your system information and compatible memory upgrades."

That was seen here when tried while obviously being tried here out and then seeing...

when I'm running 2gb of DDR2 800 PC2-6400 memory. That's what I call a "Crucial error"! :P
