linux

when you say files do you mean you extracted a .rar file and got the files?

because that is the iso.

just get your burning program to burn disk from iso and select the .rar as the iso. it has worked for me. i hve burned it twice and a friend did the same thing and it worked.

Ive DL unbuntu but only get files..
No ISo :(

When you download the file from Ubuntu.org, you need to burn that file as a .iso. Not all burning software supports the .iso feature, though. DeepBurner is a fairly common all-around good program thats very easy to use. WHen you open it up, it will ask what kind of CD you want to make. Select '.iso', then select the file you downloaded and burn it (slower speeds tend to works best, as they generally burn with less errors). After it's done, reboot to the CD via BIOS or one-time boot options, and you're good to go :)

Thing is Ive seen the versions that linux sell...
that's why I never knew..
So whats the best version?
And why?

I highly suggest you use Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

It's easy to learn compared to other versions and has a great support forum (which you will need when starting out.)

I use it and I love it. :)

EDIT: Here I go again... posting before reading the whole thread. lol

Anyway, as far as the ISO problem goes, if you have high speed internet I highly suggest you download a torrent from the Ubuntu website (you'll need a program like utorrent to download it http://www.utorrent.com/). It's a lot faster, I've download loads of versions of Linux, but found that the only way I can get them in under an hour is using a torrent. The ISO should come out right that way.

Once you get the ISO you'll have to burn the image to a CD. You CAN NOT burn the normal way. Take a look at this guide to find out how: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/In..._CD_and_DVD_images#Microsoft_Windows_.28TM.29

I suggest using ISO Recorder. It's great for the job. Also, even thought the guide is written for a different version of Linux (Mandriva) it applies to Ubuntu (and any version) as well.

its got nothing to do with illegalness seeing as it is a perfectly legit way to download linux. and the fastest way for me.

my max download speed is 160 kb/s

but for some reason... i can download certain linux distros at about 400kb/s

i dont understand why. like i suppose they have dedicated hosts or something which gives me good speed, but it shouldnt go that fast haha

give a visit to this site DistroWatch
where I downloaded my 19 Linux distributions :D
it's organized well and tracking all the new distros.. shows you the most used or downloaded distribution .. man it's perfect;)

I suggest Ubuntu ..
