Is this LCD vista compatible?

It's a LCD screen...doesn't matter what OS you use, it's going to be compatible.
The only thing you would need to do would be simply download the Vista version of the driver set for that particular model. The software disks for older models may lack those. For the Viewsonic 2005 widescreen model bought here recently a simple trip to Viewsonic saw that corrected since the driver disk was ME/2K/XP not Vista.

Drivers for monitors? You need drivers for monitors?
Hardwares of any type generally have some requirement for some type of device driver(s). Have a look in the device manager for a start.
While the monitor here could still be used without a download from Viewsonic the drivers simply being on stops Windows from prompting for them with the new hardware found messages.

You definately don't need to install monitor drivers. I have never installed drivers for any monitors I hook up (I work in retail, so I always have to set up new displays on different computers, not to mention my home, family and friends monitors), and I have had zero troubles with any of them. As long as your video card drivers are up to date your fine.
When going to install Windows fresh that's when you generally see the request appear for new hardware detected. It's the same for Vista as well as XP.
In a retail setup you are not worried about what softwares are running that may see errors comes at times for display not found and other things. By seeing them installed from the start you eliminate the need for them to be added later. simple formula.

There is a driver called monitor.sys. It's in the system32/drivers folder.

That's the Windows generic driver seen there just like Windows also sees generic video drivers until the corrrect set is installed. All that does is allow the use of the display and video chip/card until everything is on like it should be when first going to install Windows.
When going to the MS update site and selecting the custom not express option there you can see the optional hardware and software updates listed in the left column once all hardwares are detected with the scan of your system information. You'l likely find an update for the monitor in use if you don't already have a driver set on.
Actually, yeah, I did download a file for my Acer monitor through Windows Update. It allowed the monitor to be recognized in the Device Manager. I don't think it did anything else.
The update process simply saw the correct driver installed. If you look in the DM under "monitors" you should see the actual model number seen listed there.
It's just like with any other hardware like video and sound cards, onboard options, tv tuner, and other devices one way or another Windows will continue to look for drivers on everything. Once they are on any prompting for them simply stops.
Now that lcds are far more commonly used and Vista is out seeing the longest delay in the next version of Windows the MS auto search has seen an improvement as well. When going to use the first lcd here you had to manually see drivers installed on XP back some 5yrs. ago. The 15" Proview lcd simply replaced a 15" crt but mandated a driver disk then.
Later when going for a 17" BenQ lcd now retired the optional updates would include those. You can get by without them at first since WIndows does have generic drivers onhand. You'll likely see them on without ever noticing them as part of the updates with that set to auto there.
