I'm pretty sure this is a very redundant question, but is it possible to update a motherboards BIOS? And is it true that to do soe, you need a floppy drive?

Yes you can update a bios. Most newer boards have a windows based program that you can run to update the bios.

I think the floppy is need.if you have no flooppy, you can use a U disk instead of it(your motherboard must support this way).

im sorry to hijack the post but i might aswell ask it in here save starting another post.

can bad Bios updates render you motherboard useless? i heard that it can

my motherboard has this software which downloads the latest bios and installs it within windows but i dont trust it

Yeah, You can brick your MOBO updating the BIOS. Also, I wouldn't do it through Windows. Best to do it off a bootable Floppy, CD or USB.

I'd only update the BIOS as a LAST resort!

ahh thought so,nah i dont need to do it i just thought that if it as safe i would do it but i wont now ;)

if it is that risky, i won't try. It's just that my bios is probably 4 years old at least, and the only overcloking options it has is to raise the multiplyer. And without raising the voltage, I can only get my cpu from 2.5 to 3.0. Oh well...

I updated my HP bios through windows. It went good and actually fixed a few problems that I had before.

Well... I don't think it's all that risky doing it out side of Windows. Maybe in Windows it is a little. I've never updated a BIOS... My BIOS is maybe, 1 year old.

I'm not sure if a new BIOS will give the motherboard more OC'ing features, look into it before you do it, know what you want and what you'll gain from flashing it.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and 500Mhz aint a bad OC ;)

well i guess it isn't that bad of an oc, especially considering it's a VIA chipset!

Kinda funny, some people give advice on flashing a bios and has never done it:D. The Window based bios update programs when they first came out some were alittle buggie. But now they are just as reliable as flashing it through the old floppy way. In a way I would say it is better. If you have never flashed a bios with a floppy you would probable have a easier go at it doing it with the windows program.

ive flashed a few, some through windows, and some from bootable cd, idk about unlocking oc features, but on my old dell laptop it did allow it to finally boot from usb. as far as doin it some mobos have idk how to say like a 1mb split bios or whatever so if it flashes bad there is a backup..

I would recomend flashing in the bios. However, only flash if you have a problem or issue. If you make one mistake the boards trash. Unless you have dual bios of course.
