Hey Guys,

I'm in year 9 and i have exams tommorow and friday (not looking forward to it)

Then i'm off to Fiji :D:D:P

Then on school holidays.

Now onto what i wanted to say :P

Next term we have to do a project by ourselves. This is called PB, Personal Best. And i have decided to build myself a computer. I have a good one, but i thought that i would built a sort of server.... but then i thought i would build myself a new computer and then use my current PC for the server, well sort of server.

How i'm going to fund it is by doing a Junior school (Prep to 4) / Middle School (5 to 8) disco. I will charge $5.00AU for entry and you get a packet of chips and drink. I'll hopefully get the drink + chips donated by the major company. With the money i will build my new computer and upgrade my current one.

All i'm going to keep from my current system is:

  • Microsoft VX 3000 Webcam
  • Logitech X 540 Speakers

What i'm thinking is:

  • Quad Core
  • 4GB Ram
  • 8800GT Video Card 512MB
  • Dual Screen
  • Nice Case
  • Nice Wireless Keyboard + Mouse
  • DVD Burner Lightscribe

What i'm currently thinking of:

  • Intel Q6600
  • 2 x 2GB Transcend Ram
  • 8800GT Asus 512MB
  • Microsoft Desktop 1000 Wireless Keyboard + Mouse
  • WD 500GB Sata Hard Drive
  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
I Currently have this monitor but silver

I'm going to MSY Computers. This is their price list.

I need recommendation on:

  • Motherboard
  • Other Monitor - Hopefully the same
  • PSU
  • Nice Case
Pls pick for the price list... post the name and maybe a link to new egg so i can view specs etc

My current computer

  • AMD 4200+
  • 2GB Ram
  • Asus M2N X SE
  • 320GB Sata Hard
Now i'm thinking keeping this the same and adding a 500GB hard drive in. Install reinstall XP Pro SP2 and then having all of our (family) music, movies, photos on it. Then mapping the folders as network drivers on the other computers. I'll have itunes share the library and add all music into the library and then have it so you can see the music through itunes on the other computers.

Hope you understand what i'm going to do.

Thanks Cohen

Edit - Depends on how many kids i get for the disco... i'm talking about $1000 + or - a bit. But as cheap as possible. The rest of the money i might buy an IPOD :P or donate to the school.

The 800MHz Is fast ram and make sure its not non-ECC as it will give you problems in the long run

Cohen - why do we need to refer to the MSY list only? I buy all my stuff from MegaPC (www.megapc.com.au). Even though the website seems a little out-of-date at times, the service is excellent. The store shouldn't be located unreasonably far away from you, having a vague idea of where you live, so you could probably even pick up the parts from there.

Just a thought...

Because i like the store and they are cheap - i had a look at megapc and the parts are about $30 + more than MSY and i want to do it cheap and save as much money as possible.

Not to sound like a cock or anything, but I see a 10% chance of your plan going over smoothly.

It doesn't seem you have this formal / dance thing planned out well enough.

OK - This is what i'm doing.

For the junior school i'm holding a disco. From Grades Prep to 2, then 3 to 6.

I'm a part of the light + sound team at school so i can use the Sound system + lighting rig. I will charge $6.00 entry and that will be for 1.5 hours and then at the end you get to take a can of drink + chips home. There will be some water + cordial available as well.

Then from that money i will buy my new computer....

is that better?

Also who voted no??

You should be more worried about the dance than the computer. How much organization have you put into this? How are you going to spread the word, have people sign up, collect money, contact administration about permissions (if needed) and all sorts of other things. These things are often a lot harder than it seems at first. I'm selling T-shirts right now in my school and it's taken up hours on end of my time just to organize everything.

I did. It just seems parties like that don't do so well when there's an entry fee.

Well the school use to one at the end of the year for the junior school but they didn't do one last year.

For his build in mind, 1000W is waaaay overkill ;) 500-650W is enough. :)

Going to do that

Your plan sounds good, but I don't see it working out. You might have 175 kids at your disco and you might have 6...

I think i should get a good turn out....

OK.... well i can really do anything until next term... just find out a few things like what i can get donated (food + drink), when i'm going to be able to do it.... i have spoken to one of my year 9 teachers and he says it is a great idea.

If i don't get enough money i'm going to have to think of something else.....:cool:
