The only benefit I see in doing this would be if you could cool the fluid. Just having it submerged in room temp oil is inferior to good air cooling or water cooling.

s-video should work just fine. Test the TV's input to make sure it works, and if it does, test your laptops output somewhere else to make sure THAT works. Also, when you attach the s-video you might have to switch displays on your laptop settings. I have a feeling that is the issue.
