I checked and a macbook pro is about $1800 with the most inexpensive config. with educationm discount. Thanks for the info, I guess I have to get one with business or ultimate and that does even the playing field out because they definitely jack up the price. I'm going to keep my options open...

You can do better for that kind of budget. Try customizing one at ibuypower.com I did a comparable one to that dell for about $1000 less.

Keep looking, I've seen dual core systems out there for $500 with bigger hard drives and more features.

Here's some good ones, I recommend 3gb ram for vista, it used to be two but for about the same price you can get one with 3gb and it'll allow you to do multitasking and things like that...

What about xubuntu? It's a version of ubuntu that needs fewer resources. The min requirements say 128mb so that's very close but if you use the alternate install cd it only requires 64mb of ram. Either way it'll run better on that machine than windows xp.

Your build is too good for vista basic. Get home premium for $20 more or stick with XP. Basic is XP with vista's problems, you're not getting any benefits, not even aero.

I wouldn't do any upgrades on it whatsoever. Just delete all the temp files. go to control panel-internet options-and it should be in there. Save your money
