$2,500/$3,000 Max - Gaming and Editing computer build

Hey everyone, Im planning to build a new computer in the near future. I have a list ready for suggestions and opinions. The computer will be used for gaming and 3D editing with Blender and such. the only thing im not sure about is going with a GTX 680 or an HD 7970GHz. Blenders render engine does use CUDA so that would be nice but the i7 seems fast enough at CPU rendering. Then the 7970 is cheaper and faster, also heard that you can run Physx on the CPU.

Anyway here is the list

I would take the 680 over the 7970 for rendering. Especially if the software you want to use can take advantage of CUDA.

Just had a look over your build.

All looks like good stuff to me, however for one graphics card, an 850W PSU is overkill. Save your money and go for something in the 600-700W range.

Also, if you want 16GB of RAM (which btw for editing I recommend, I have 16 for editing and it's handy to have), I'd get 2x8GB sticks rather than 4x4GB sticks. That way, you can easily upgrade to 32GB later. And you never know, you may want to. ;) :D

Stick with the 680 too. :)

Thanks all. I'm not real set on getting that monitor I may go for a 27'', What monitor would you recommend for a triple set up? I only need one for now but I may get more later on.

As for the ram, getting 2x8 sounds like the better way to go as I may upgrade to 32gb later on.

I think I will stick with the 680.

Would the PSU still be overkill with dual GPUs? I don't plan to run 2 cards but still wont the option if I ever decide to.

New ram I chose, Same kit but 2x8 which is actually a little cheaper.

850W would be plenty for two GPUs. If you think you may want to run two cards in the future, there's no harm in getting the 850W PSU now to save you some hassle I suppose. :)

850w is good for an SLI setup. I would switch that 680 to a dual slot cooler rather than a triple if you are planning on SLI. The blower style from EVGA would be a good choice.

I mentioned a larger display because you mentioned using Blender as your design program. So if you are going to use this mainly for design I would look into a 1440p monitor rather than a 1080 monitor. If you are gaming mostly and designing on the side, 1080 is totally fine and the monitor you chose is awesome for gaming.

I was a little worried about the gigabyte card taking up to much space but the way the PCI slots on the Sabertooth Z77 are positioned it is possible correct? The reason I ask is that im pretty set on the gigabyte card. I doubt ill change that.

I pretty much do the same amount of gaming and editing so ill check out a larger 1440p monitor. If I see nothing I like ill stick with the one I first chose or something similar.

Thanks!

2 would fit but that would take you down from 2 PCI Express x1 and one x4 slot to one PCI Express x1 slot for any other expansion cards that you want to use in your PC. Also not having the extra space between the cards will take down the airflow for the top card. I have a single space between my 560's with really good coolers and still while gaming sometimes I'll see the top card get 7-9c higher than the lower card. I would hate to see it choked against the back of the other GPU.

It's really your choice but I would get 2 of the Asus 4gb cards if you want a dual fan cooler and SLI.

If there is a microcenter nearby this is really a good deal

Iv'e looked at all the other GTX680 4gb's and I still prefer to get the gigabyte card. ill run it single until newer cards come out then I might go with SLI. Even looks like that may be soon, by the time I get around to buying this stuff the new hardware will be out and ill have to start all over *rolls eyes*

I wouldn't get a sabertooth, get something by Gigabyte. On that budget, get a 1440P monitor. A 670 is just like 12 percent worse then a 680 for $100 less. Get a 2 tb drive and get 2 of them for a Raid 1 array.

Awesome, good info. Im glad you mentioned the fans, I didn't know that they made some more specific to radiators.

Also glad you mentioned the Mobo as I was a little unsure of the sabertooth. Im sure its a great board but if I can bring the price down for basically the same thing I will.

Iv'e got my eye one the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128545&Tpk=UD5H&IsVirtualParent=1

Would you recommend 2TB HD's in raid 1 over an SSD?

I currently have a HAF 932 that im pretty happy with so I figured the HAF-X would be even better. I might look around at other cases, watch some reviews or something.

A lot of people seem to be going for the 2400 ram, is it worth getting over 1600 or 1866?
I just recently got into overclocking, not a huge deal for me but I may OC later on.

And still the GPU.... gotta be the hardest choice every time. The 670 performence for the money seems to be better then a 680. Im just tired of running games at mid setting and still running at under 30 FPS with my 6750 2GB. I play skyrim with no texture mods but with a decent ENB which is still berely playable. Any texture mods completely destroys it.

Alright I will look into running a RAID 1 HD set up, having a back up for everything is always nice.

Yeah I figured that about the 2400 ram so I will also check out the 1866 ram, what brand would you recommend?

(edit) just realized that the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H does not support 1866 RAM. Hmm

I think I will see how fast the 3770k renders and if its fast enough I will got for a HD7970. If not ill probably go for this card....

Yeah I'd recommend rendering on the graphics card rather than on the CPU, so for this build, I'm recommending NVIDIA since their cards have CUDA.
