im in the same situation, with the same resolution and i'm going 8800, first off its less expensive than 2 8600's (i'm pretty sure anyway), second the 8800's performance is (marginally) greater than the 2 8600's, and third i have the option of going SLI with another 8800.

low end and mid end cards don't really improve much at SLI mode or crossfire mode. would run faster but does not surpass a high end card at all.

SLI and crossfire mode doesn't endable 2 cards running at 200 percent. it only adds about 25 - 75 percent. even quad core doesn't run at 400 % nor does duo core.

Ya I agree with your answer.Go with single 8800.Two 8600 GTS won't beat single 8800.

Makes me laugh, every card will become a loe end card, in 2 years those card we consider awsome 2day will be low end, but there capacity for SLI will stay the same, nothing changed...

the 8600gts's in sli will significantly outperform even a 8800GTX

um no.

http://www.digital-daily.com/video/8600gts_sli_vs_8800gts/

1st bar = 8600GTS
2nd bar = 8600GTS SLI
3rd bar = 8800GTS 640
4th bar - 8800GTS 640 w/ x6800 instead of qx6700

the 8800GTX beats the 8600GTS SLI in EVERY single test.

All in all, the test results are self-evident. Nevertheless, let's recap it all up. In none of the tests the combination of two 8600GTS in the SLI mode was able to surpass the single 8800GTS at performance.

But HD2900XT is more expensive

And what do you mean by "true DX10" ?!! All 8 series are true DX10 as well !
DX10 had a set of standards that video card manufacturers had to meet, however nVidia never included all those features in their 8 series cards, so Microsoft agreed to make those features optional. The 2K series however has those features included.
