$200 to upgrade my computer....

So i have about $200 i can put down towards upgrading my computer... is there anything i can do thats worth doing for this price?

solid state drives are much faster than hard drives. your applications will load quicker, your computer will boot up faster, games load quicker, and according to multiple credible sources (like anandtech) it is the single most noticeable upgrade you can make to your computer
 
Is your current system an original equipment manufacturer build (like a Dell, Acer, Hewlett Packard) or is it a custom build? Do you have a Windows installation disk?

sorry to get back so late. The computer is a custom built. and yes i have the Windows Xp installation disk.
 
What do you do with your PC if you game then a new GPU would be good if not then a CPU and motherboard upgrade would be good for you. What kind of motherboard do you have it might support some of the newer CPU's which would save you some money on buying a new motherboard.

Edit: After researching your mobo it does not support any thing over the Athlon 64 x2 6000+

You can either use the rest towards a better CPU or motherboard. Another hard drive maybe another PSU depending on what brand you have.

Depending on what you use your computer for either one will be a noticeable upgrade.

The motherboard idea is pretty good. I would save up a few more bucks and get a new board, more ram and maybe a better cpu.

I like the first combo deal you linked. seems like a good deal.

Is that CPU faster than the one i have now?

and is my GPU that bad?

The Athlon II X2 are the same as the Phenom II X2 expect the Athlon is a true dual core and it has less cache. It is newer technologhy then the Athlon 64 CPU's and you will get better preformance per clock then the Athlon 64.

Skip the Regor cpu, it won't be THAT much better than what you have, not even noticeable. Upgrade your motherboard and ram right now, leave the CPU to be upgraded later.

2X2gb better than mismatched 4x1gb. Plus it leaves a future upgrade to 8gb. You won't be able to run 1066 mhz until you upgrade your CPU, but thats OK for now 800 is fast enough for the rest of your system. Basically what we're doing here is getting a foundation for better parts later on.

And save the leftover toward a quad CPU and better GPU eventually when prices come down on them. Nothing wrong with the CPU you have now, it's right on par with the games your graphics card can handle.

He'd also have to buy ddr3 memory with that setup...$$$$

And I wouldn't recommend the 710 to anybody when the 550 is the same price and the 720 is $20 more.

Athlon II x2 250 will stomp his current CPU so I don't know what your talking about. Secondly 710 is a triple core the 550 is a dual core the extra core is plenty worth the extra $20. Even though the 550 has higher clock speed the 710 has a extra core which means the 710 will out preform the 550 in most tests..

Yea there are a couple just to name a few Crysis, GTA4, Operation Flashpoint 2, Rage, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, Far cry 2, Sega Rally Revo, grid, etc, Not saying you can't play them just not on high setting or anything. GTA4 really requires a quad core CPU to run smoothly.
