280 GTX and new drivers

From reviews I have been reading from different sites the 280 is pretty much equal to the 9800 Gx2 .On some tests it is only marginally better than the Gx2 and some it doesnt performs as well.As I am new to building computers will new drivers help that much .And what happened to the 40% increase in performance over the Gx2 that I had read about? When it is an extra $250 or so on average more what incentive would people have to buy it over the current best card.Hmm it looks like Ati will win this one as Nvidia really dropped the ball this time.

I'm really dissapointed. The 8800 Ultra had a similar price-point and it smoked the competition. From what I've read as well, the GTX 280 probably isn't worth the price. Driver updates, IMO, won't lead to a dramatic performance increase.

the 9800gx2 was a similar price to the gtx280 when it came out. and the 9800gx2 it actually beats the gtx280 in 3dmark06 which it sorta should i guess because of 2 g92 cores vs 1. but i blame it on premature drivers give nvidia a couple months and the gtx280 will be cheaper and flying with the new drivers. ati has been dropping the ball for a while, on paper their cards should beat nvidia cards or at least some close to them but poor hardware and drivers has thrown that out the window so i dont have high hopes for the 4870 either.

heres the review of the 9800gx2 and the gtx280 in 3dmark 06

Mep, ya stole mah post! :D

Agreed.

Early BS, never believe early benchies, lately they seem to be turning into propaganda more often than not. Also I wouldn't so quickly call the win for ATI. It's priced lower, has some of the same "mistakes" as the last series of cards, it seems to me that the ATI's is set to be be behind, or at the most (with Nvid price drops), shoulder to shoulder with Nvid.

I used to run a dual Ultra setup. Never noticed a significant performance gain from driver updates. Just my experience...

I as alot of people were hoping new drivers may breathe some extra performance into the card, but come to think of it new drivers I have Dl on my old cards were only marginally better or no difference.Well Ill still hold out hope that Ati hits a home run.I think as long as they price it correctly the 4870 may be a big winner. Is it suppose to be as good as a 3870 X2 or maybe a little better?

showoff! :O anyways, the one time I did notice a huge improvements with a driver update was when i tried playing FarCry on my old mx440, but other than that, well, sometimes it did improve a bit, but not THAT much.

I'm a bit disappointed with the nvidia cards lately. I thought the 7800GTX's were power hog's, but all newer cards just gotten worse!

i'll agree the 9XXX series was a flop, but i thought the 8800's were good; i love my 8800gt and a lot of people like them; as were the 8600's... lets just not talk about the 8500 and 8400

what I dislike about the 8800's series, is their power consumption when beeing idle tough! its jsut way too high (for a card basicly doing nothing)

ATI have a much bigger power consumption though, Look at something like the 2900XT, that thing drinks electricity. I think the 8 Series were good with the power consumption. Can't say too much about the new cards though.

I ran my system in sig, on a 380watt PSU for about two hours, playing games and such.

yeah i'll give you that one, my old 500w with 38amps wasnt enough for my 8800gt (but the old psu was by apevia and went through 4 brownouts). fortunately they started making separate psu's for graphics cards, which is just sad but necessary i guess today

the 3870's use less pwoer than their nvidia counterparts tough:) (and yea, thats why I didnt went for ato with the 2900 series! nor with the G80 8800's either )

Yeah, ATI do have it slightly better now, But I don't think it's much really... I don't think it's anything to put you off buying a card. Oh Yeah, the G80 GTS' were bad!

yea, but thats full load continue. when gaming the load is never that constant at full load :) (at least, not in much games I know,.. ofc, that is if you limit the framerate to 60 or so)

yea, its already beeing taken care of ;) its those spam bots that post useless posts, to spread the links in the signatures around on a forum. so I wouldnt click the links if I were you:)
