why the i7 965? you could have gotten two gtx 285's and an i7 920 in place of that :(

It's gonna be a desktop server for the most part. We are gonna use it to push out Altiris images onto old pc's and refurbish them. We wanted CPU power, and since it's not a server board, we went with the top i7. It also will be used to test out thin-client technology.

did you miss the part where the i7 is the top of the line intel chip? ddr3, quick path interface, unlocked multiplier, 8 core hyper threading? all i see about the am3 is that it supports ddr2 memory. last time i checked, ddr3 is the newest.

Many of the AMD Phenom II processors do use DDR3 memory. There were only two of the Phenom II processors that used DDR2 memory I believe.

Yes, the Intel i7 processors are the fastest out there presently, but you will pay for money them. As I have stated previously I personally don't like the i7 processors because they are 130 Watt and above. If Intel ever refines the i7 processor technology to be 100 Watt or lower it will look tempting to me.

why would that stop someone with no budget limit from buying one?

I just read in my maximum PC that using DDR2 or DDR3 with the respective AMD chips leads to no real performance difference.

Nice looking build, what are you going to do with all that processing power?

Overclocking goals? anything?

well heres the thing. we want to use this computer for three main purposes.

the first purpose is for use with the club. we're going to use altiris enterprise software to help reformat and recycle used computers to give to students in need.

the second purpose is for use with testing out thin client technology. as a club, we are interested in thin clients, as they appear to be very energy effiecient and cheap. this computer will provide a backbone server for the thin clients.

and the third purpose is to host dedicated servers for our lan party at the end of august LOL.

were really trying to focus on getting the thin clients to perform well with video intensive computing. thin clients are built with a limited amount of onboard video ram. we want to be at a point where we can run 3d modeling programs or animations programs on several thin clients at once by only using one server.
