7600GT vs X850XT

nice. So i think ima get a s754 mobo w/ SLi so that i can keep all my current components and upgrade to PCI-E. I'd really like to play through Oblivion with all the features enabled and with good framerates, so the SM3 feature on the 7600GT really appeals to me. Plus, if UT2007 gives me any trouble, all i would have to do it buy another 7600GT, and it should be fine.

Do you all think that is a sound decision by sticking with my current CPU/socket so i don't have to dump a bunch of money on a new s939 one?

Speaking of which... is it ME, or are s754 mobos w/ SLi next to impossible to find??

Newegg only has one:

But what gets me about this mobo is everyone on the reviews saying that the PCI-E 16x rails only run @ 8x on their GPU. oO;

With the older SLI boards, if you have two video cards, they both run at 8x speeds, but thats still not much of a bottleneck.

so the newer 939 ones can run SLi at 16x in both rails?

is it necessary that all 754 boards run SLi at only 8x? :(

It's not so much the socket, but the chipset on the motherboard. I believe only the nFoce5xx can run true dual x16 cards, but im not sure.

And you wouldnt notice a difference between 8x and 16x, unless your possibly running two 7950GX2's.

You are wasting your money if you get an Sli motherboard for Socket 754. Just stick with a single PCI-e 16X slot and you will be fine for now.

I don't understand that one. the price difference between one and two PCI-E is usually small, and i also have the security of having a potential SLi configuration if any games give me graphics lagg. It's not like i'll rush to get two 7600GTs at the same time just to run SLi. The reason why i'm sticking with my 754 is simply because i don't wanna drop the extra cash for new a CPU if i get a 939, which i am presuming you mean.

i can get a new mobo with SLi option and one 7600GT both for under $200 while being able to use the rest of my components...

This new upgrade will be a simple one, meant to last long enough till i can afford all the upgrades for dual core, DDR2, and DX10 components. now THAT will be the real upgrade...

but you know what sucks? That mobo, the EPoX EP-8NPA, seems like my ONLY bet! I searched froogle for "Sli 754," and that is the ONLY mobo that came up! I tried the advanced search in Newegg under those two catagories, and i got the same thing :(

dont worry about having 2 x8 PCI-e slots.. especially with for example 2 7600GT's you wouldnt notice anything.
I went from a 2 x8 pci-e SLI motherboard, to one with 2 x16 pci-e SLI motherboard.. using 2 7800GTX's and i didnt see a difference :)
( i changed the board tough, because i want to overclock my CPU,.. but my currently PSU isnt allowing me to do so yet.. and the new one is still shipped :( )

True on the first part, but wrong on the 'but im not sure part' :)
The NForce 4 SLI x16 chipset can also (as the name suggests) run 2 x16 pci-e slots. :o

Basically what I am saying that it is better to:
1. Have more choices for motherboards.
2. Not get an EPox motherboard.
3. As for Sli, you will most likely be upgrading your whole motherboard before you would have SLi 7600GTs.
4. There is absolutely no point in Sliing 7600GTs, as them in SLi won't be nearly as good as a DX10 card next year.

well, of course! but i think that i will be able to play oblivion pretty well with 2 7600GTs in SLi (that is, if i decide to buy another one).

that EPoX EP-8NPA seems like my only bet if all i will replace is the mobo and GPU.

someone made an excellent suggestion with that 939 mobo + AMD 64 2.4 gHz combo for $200... i was VERY tempted in getting it... but i'm wondering how well that will handle UT2007... since im upgrading for that game.
