i dont know which to get the gtx 512 or 256. my parents will let me buy either one. but why is the 512 mb only 256 bit are they going to come out with a 512 mb with 512 bit and if they do when? when are newer better videocards going to be coming out again? and i thought the new nvidia 512 mb was going to be called ultra not gtx or am i missing something?

these are the cards i was thinking of getting

512 mb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127195

256 mb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127182

and i know my cpu wont bottleneck the 256 mb version but will my cpu bottleneck the 512 mb version card.

any help is appreciated

well, obviously if you are in a hurry to get one go with the 256mb. if you have an sli board, i would say just get two of the 256mb. but then again you also might need a new psu.

the new 7800gtx 512 is the ultra version of the 7800gtx. it is just called 512 istead of ultra...
newer, better video cards? already? :\
get the 256 version, it will be plenty.

or go to www.pricewatch.com to find the 7800gtx 512. you must have some generous parents to spend $800

get the 256 version and then sli it

ok thanks

i dont have a sli motherboard.

does anybody know when the 512 mb are going to in stock at newegg or are in stock someplace else

anybody else?

He said that his motherboard isnt capable of SLI. Go with the 512MB version if you can get either one.

But if your using it with the system in your sig, then its going to be bottlenecked by your cpu.

really depends on the game

well in this other thread i had SFR and Tweaker both said that my cpu will not bottleneck this videocard the 256 mb version anyway.
http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=29358

but i was thinking of getting this now for the computer i have and then down the road buying a new computer. but how long will this card last 1 year or more and how long before better cards come out.

If your able to, go with the 7800GTX 256MB and get either a Pentium D or AMD X2 CPU.

how good is the pentium D in gaming cause i cant afford the x2 if i get a new videocard but i can afford a new dell with a pentium D in it when i get this card but i dont really want to get a new computer right now i was thinking in a year or two so would this videocard work until then and will i be able to play counterstrike source and fear and battlefield 2 and call of duty 2 all maxed out.

yeah, a lot of games are gpu bound, although there are some exceptions(F.E.A.R. i think).

hard to say how long it will last. if you HAVE to have your settings maxed, then probably not that long. however if you dont care to play on low settings, then it should probably be good for some time.

EDIT: i would say it will be a good long while b4 a 7800gtx will have to be on low setting to run a game. lol

i agree with modoman that the 256mb will do just fine.
your better off getting the 256mb as the 512mb's are insanely hard to get. nvidia is only selling 4,000 units a week to the entire world, 4000 may seem alot but its not... and the supply has over exeeded the demand. I kept waiting on newegg for days since the release..and when they do say they are in stock..right when im about to checkout it says item is out of stock..thats how fast they go.
also you can just OC the 256 b/c the 512mb is overkill... on a 256 your already playing on high settings. plus you save all that money and can upgrade other things on your comp. like a sli mobo and a better CPU.

ya ill probably get the 256 mb version. now i have a dell 4700 that requires a 24 pin powersupply. what one would be good for gtx256 mb and a x-fi xtrememusic soundcard.

I can play CSS and CoD2 maxed out on my system...

Tweaker has a Pentium D system and his system seems to be a very nice one. You should ask him, since there are very few people here that i've seen who have a Pentium D system. Just remember that its not as good as the AMD X2, but should still be an excellent CPU.

Hey

Hey dude i used to wonder the same thing about the video card and i just spent the few extra bucks i looked at it this way why upgrade your gpu and get the average card when in a few months it will be a "meh" card so if u get the sweet card now in a few months/year it will still be one of the best and it will take a while for that card to drop in price and ati is pretty much never gonna come out with crossfire at the rate they are going so i would say from experience get the 512 and enjoy it i just started playin battlefield 2 and everything is maxed and no lag and its sweet
