AMD just this december came out with their first 65nm core. intel did that in june. there is a big R&D industry inside intel
Intel is a much larger company. AMD is not able to keep up with Intel in the R&D area, Yes that's a given. But Amd competes in different areas; such as expanding their current tech, Bringing performance/cost to the market, so on. Each company excels in different areas, and Amd is going to bring down the cost of it's current line-up because Intel has the slightly superior chip so it can compete.
