AMD Socket Types

I'm slightly confused about AMD socket types.

Had my computer for about a year now, and I'm running an:

ASUS A8N-SLI SE Skt939 motherboard
AMD Athlon 3000+ (single core)

I'm looking to buy a faster, dual core processor, but the main ones I can seem to find are all AM2 - the equivalent skt939 processors are FAR harder to find, and a lot more expensive.

I read on a website just now something about AM2 being compatible with 939 socket types, and I *seem* to remember something about my motherboard supporting 940 pin, or something like that.

Anyway, the question is, if I buy an AM2 chip, will it run in my computer?

Thanks in advance.

An AM2 CPU will not fit in a 939 socket motherboard, and AM2 and 940 are two different sockets as well, both are not compatible with each other.

The reason you cant find them is because AMD doesnt make them anymore, they only make AM2 versions, although you might be able to find some on eBay.

If you want to buy a new motherboard and processor, you may want to look into LGA775 and the Core 2 Duo's.

Dang.

Thanks anyway, I can't be bothered to upgrade my computer fully.. found a skt 939 3800+ X2, think I might just buy that, it's only 60 pounds.

Well, I'm from the UK...
Also, it says that processor is out of stock.

Is there a significant perfomance increase from a 3000+ to a 3800+ X2?

Uhhh, one is dual core(X2), so it will perform better in multi-threaded apps and multi-tasking.

they are both 2ghz right? Or i think the 3000 is 1.9ghz?

Yeah, this is 1.8ghz.

Is the 3800+ x2 good for overclocking?
My brother wants me to try overclocking it... :D

Its great for overclocking, but i think 2.8ghz is the limit on it, iv never seen anyone OC an X2 past 2.8ghz. But its fast at 2.8ghz
