another what to upgrade on my comp..? thread

So I want to get my comp ready for D3.

Current setup
ASUS p5q-pro motherboard
intel core 2 duo e4300 1.8ghz processor 65nm LGA 775
nvidia geforce 9800gtx graphics
4 gigs pc2-6400 ddr2 ram
Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2DB PS

Im going to assume (hope) that my mobo and graphics card will suffice, but what I want to upgrade is my cpu to an i7 quad core 3.0+ processor. such as
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130

Also throw in around 8 gigs of some ddr2? such as
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&name=8GB (2 x 4GB)&Order=PRICED&Pagesize=100

Will I need to upgrade my PS?

I know enough about computers to figure out my specs and such, but when it comes to 45 65 32nm, core duo quad core, 2x 4gb or 4x 2gb I get lost...

Honestly I just want to be able to play Diablo 3 without having to spend more than 500.. which I know is possible.

Maybe the links I threw up are overkill (I have no idea), but Id rather spend an extra 100-200 to get something that will last for a couple years.

The desktop I have is 3-5 years old -cant remember exactly- at this point but I think the majority of components inside are good enough..

let me know what can be done!

thanks

I dunno where you're getting an i7 from, because its not one, but yeah, that CPU should work in that motherboard. But is it worth it? For $340, that CPU is not. Plus its out of stock anyway You can build a much better system using a AMD CPU for around 500. You could sell the one you have now and invest that money into the computer, so you'd have around $500+whatever the computer sells for.

What OS do you have? And I would recommend upgrading the PSU, just because its low quality, if you decide to upgrade rather then build a new one.

And 8GB of DDR3 goes for $50-70, so DDR2 isn't worth it anymore, really. Your video card would be bottlenecking your system if you went up to 8GB. And I doubt D3 will use more than 4GB of RAM.

that motherboard is a 775 socket, no i series cpus can work with it, you must have a lga1155 for the newest and fastest i series (sandy bridge) and there is also the lga 1156 and lga 1366 sockets, all of which are used by the i series of cpus but all use different cpus. for what you want it may be easiest to get an am3+ board, a phenom ii 955 or 965 (second on sale currently for 15 off so is 115 instead of 130), then grab about 8 gb's of ddr3 for 50, and you need a new psu and probably a new gpu too. then also with a new mobo means a new os disk since that is liscenced to the mobo.

but if all you want to do is play d3 then all you really need is to wait, that looks like it might be able to play it, the only real problem i see is the 1.8ghz cpu, which i'd say you should look on ebay as far as that, a new one is rediculously priced. then you can also look at a new gpu like the radeon hd5770 or higher along with the gts 2 and 450's, and the gtx550 and 550ti and higher, those are all good cards around 100 or higher new and you can find good deals on ebay, but if you get a new gpu that psu is a crap brand, you'd need to go to newegg and grab a corsair cx500 for 60, which has a 10 buck mir.

I kept editing my first post and that is why the i7 is in there... forgot to change it out.
That is good to know though that I cant even get an i7 processor...

I was trying to stay away from AMD but if that isnt possible then Ill just get over it.

only reason why I didnt suggest ddr3 was cause I looked up my mobo specs and it said it was ddr2 so I wasnt sure if it would be ddr3 compatible... also good to know! ddr3 it is.

that is unfortunate to hear about my graphics card!

So clapt you think that it would just be more efficient for me to completely build a new comp?

I guess if I could sell my comp for a couple hundred bucks it would be nice to have a completely new comp..

I was planning on spending 3-500 on upgrades for this guy, but instead I could sell it for 2-400 and then add that to the 3-5 I was going to spend and put 5-8 into a new comp..

interesting.

In all honesty would you all reccommend me just starting from scratch? Never built my own comp so Ill have alot of research to do. --which I do not mind at all--

no the mobo can't support ddr3, was saying to go to the amd am3+ socket with an amd cpu, then you could use ddr3 with that.

and from those specs a new from scratch buid would be the most cost efficient, those parts are dated and overpriced for new ones.

did you see the thread on this forum in this section stuck at the top of the page on how to build a comp with pictures.

yea thats what I was referring to. I just have to find all the components and such.

I think Im just going to throw money into a jar and once the specs are released for D3 then Ill build a comp... by the time the game actually comes out Im sure some new product will be out.
