Are high end cards with 256mb still good for gaming?

I'm going to upgrade my rig in a months time. I'm starting with the mo-bo,cpu and psu first and then upgrade my GPU after that. I'm wondering if getting a 7900GS would be my best choice? I'm not planning to switch to Vista so I won't be needing a DX10 card.

Palit GeForce 7900GS 256MB DDR3

and if I save a bit more I'll be getting one of these

Anyway, is that 7900GS a good card?

Thanks in advance!:)

hpi is stoned, don't listen to him. :P They are both good last generation cards, but planning a newer build around them isn't the best of ideas, notwithstanding budget. I would recommend either the 8800gt or a HD 3870, both relatively cheap, DX10, and stronger than either the 7900's.

That I MAY be BUT it didn't affect my comment :P

Notice how you said Last generation cards ? If someones gonna build a new pc matters well go for a new better card :)

So it all adds up in the end.

i really don't need the best rig. i just need something that is stronger than what i have right now.

okay, 7900gs is good. but is the 256mb still good for newer games?

i'm also currently looking at the ati x1950xt. 512mb gddr3 for 9.5k php is a pretty sweet deal but what is it's nvidia counterpart?

256 is still alright, although with some of the newer games coming out, a card with more VRAM will definitely be a boon. On the subject of newer games, A DX10 card will be a must, If you do choose a 7/X1000 series card you will be hindering your ability to play future games to certain extant.. your decision. The 1950xt is comparable to the 7950gt, Though alittle better I believe, the extra RAM will help as well. On the other hand the XT is hotter, and needs more power than the GT.

@hpi I agree, you should say that next time. You sound like a total noob going "uh them cards there suck" :D

thanks dude! i'll keep that in mind. if i do get the x1950xt i'll just buy a GPU cooler for it.

my build is on a budget. i'm going to get a amd athlon x2 5200+ 2.6ghz, still dont know what mobo, 2x kingston 1gb ddr2-800 ram, coolmaster 550w psu, AND MANY LED FANS! Mmmmm... Green...:P

why dont you try an 8600GTS? it may not be faster than the x1950s but it sure support dx10 and is future proof...that would cost about 9k php right..

It's not future proof, and as I as well as others have said, a mid-ranged DX10 card wouldn't be a good choice against a high end DX9 card for the same price. Graphics wise, maxed out DX9 games will look better then DX10 games on low/medium settings.

Playing a game in DX10 mode generally gains better FPS per setting. I don't really get what you're trying to say..? If you compare a 7900gs to a 8600gts, the GTS would play on the same settings, but in DX10 mode. The GTS might even play better, due to DX10 being better optimized than DX9.

hey hey! fellow filipino! like i said in the other page i have no plans to upgrade to vista so i won't be needing a dx10 card. and for the price of a mid dx10 card i can get a high end dx9 card instead.

i will definitely go for the x1950, or else go for an 7950,:P

x1950xt or 7950gt is what i'm deciding on.
